PH REAFFIRMS SUPPORT FOR ASEAN EFFORTS ON MYANMAR AT UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY DIALOGUE

On 19 June 2026, Permanent Representative Enrique A. Manalo delivered the Philippine statement at the Informal Meeting of the General Assembly on Myanmar, which featured a briefing by United Nations Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar Julie Bishop.

Speaking in the Philippines’ capacity as Chair of ASEAN, Ambassador Manalo reaffirmed ASEAN’s commitment to the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus and underscored the importance of the cessation of violence, inclusive national dialogue, and timely humanitarian assistance to affected communities.

The Philippines highlighted the continuing efforts of Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro, in her capacity as Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar, to engage a broad range of stakeholders in support of a peaceful and durable solution to the crisis. Ambassador Manalo also emphasized the importance of sustained cooperation between ASEAN and the UN in advancing humanitarian assistance, confidence-building measures, and dialogue.

PH DISCUSSES DEVELOPMENTS IN MYANMAR WITH UN SPECIAL ENVOY ON MYANMAR JULIE BISHOP

On 18 June 2026, Permanent Representative Enrique A. Manalo met with Ms. Julie Bishop, United Nations Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar, at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on recent developments in Myanmar and discuss ongoing efforts by ASEAN and the UN in support of peace, stability, humanitarian assistance, and dialogue.

The Philippines, as ASEAN Chair in 2026, remains committed to supporting ASEAN-led efforts under the Five-Point Consensus and strengthening cooperation with the UN in pursuit of a peaceful, durable, and Myanmar-owned and -led solution.

At the 6th meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on United Nations Security Council reform on 15 June 2026, Third Secretary Cathe Aguilar commended the IGN Co-Chairs, Kuwait and the Netherlands, for the Revised Elements Paper and underscored the need to improve the representation of the Asia-Pacific and other underrepresented regions in the Security Council.

The Philippines also reaffirmed its support for comprehensive Security Council reform through a balanced package across all five clusters and encouraged continued efforts to identify practical areas of convergence toward a more representative, effective, and accountable Council.
