From Vava'u to Nuku'alofa, I met students who will be Tonga's future leaders and Australia Awards alumni who are already making a difference in their communities.

Australia Awards has built a network of more than 700 alumni in Tonga working across education, health, government, civil society and business. Their contributions are helping strengthen institutions, expand opportunities and support Tonga's development.

Netball is one of the fastest growing sports for women and girls across the Pacific.

The buzz around the is still palpable following their Commonwealth Games performance. Speaking with Governor-General of Australia, Salote Sisifa (CEO of Tonga Netball), and kids in Tonga dreaming of being the next netball superstars, their impact is being felt far beyond the court.

Loved hearing from netball legends Briony Akle (Assistant Coach of the New Zealand Silver Ferns), Amy Sligar (Vice-Captain of Giants Netball), and Liz Ellis AO (Chair of the Netball World Cup 2027 Local Organising Committee) on what makes the game such a powerful sport for women and girls.

Throughout the visit, I was struck by the values that underpin Tongan society: fakaʻapaʻapa (respect), fetokoniʻaki (supporting one another), loto tō (humility) and vā (the relationships that connect people and communities). These values were evident in every conversation and continue to strengthen the partnership between Australia and Tonga.

World Humanitarian Day 🌏

Today we commemorate the extraordinary people who step forward in times of crisis to provide critical support to those facing conflict, disaster and displacement. We also remember those who have lost their lives in humanitarian service around the world.

This year’s theme, ‘Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities’, captures two essential aspects of humanitarian work: the need for countries to stand alongside those delivering lifesaving assistance in increasingly dangerous circumstances, and the need to ensure the people closest to a crisis have the resources, skills and leadership to prepare for, respond to and recover from it.

Because the most effective responses combine global support with local leadership.
