AAFSC was active in the Bronx last week, showing up for our community across the borough. In 2025 alone, AAFSC served nearly 2,000 individuals in the Bronx, making it the second most-served borough across our Preventive programs.

Our Preventive Services team connected with ~30 families and fellow providers at the Morris Shelter and the NYC Administration for Children's Services- ACS Bronx North Community Outreach Event in Bay Plaza, sharing information on legal services, SNAP enrollment, housing assistance, family therapy, support for survivors of domestic violence, and parenting education.

We also connected families to daycare vouchers, furniture requests, and trusted community partners across the Bronx. We’re proud to bring vital support directly to Bronx families.

Do you know Maha Attieh? She is one of only two Arabic-speaking certified health care navigators in the entire State of New York. Maha is a fountain of knowledge about how to enroll in health insurance and helps hundreds of families each year access the care they need through NY State of Health.

With nearly 500,000 New Yorkers receiving notices that their Essential Plan health coverage may end July 1 due to federal cuts, Maha can help clients understand changes and explore options to maintain coverage and avoid gaps in care.

Thank you to NY State of Health for helping make health access possible for so many people in the community we serve.

AAFSC’s Anti-Violence Program recognized National Crime Victims' Rights Week with Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz and the Queens DA’s Crime Victims Advocate Program (CVAP) on April 22 at Queens Borough Hall. We were joined by Safe Horizon and the Mount Sinai Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Program (SAVI) along with other community partners.

AAFSC's Case Managers Liliana and Sandra attended the event where one of Liliana’s clients bravely shared her story of overcoming domestic violence and thanked the advocates who helped her rebuild. Liliana helped her client secure employment. Today, in addition to working, she actively advocates for other survivors.

This month's Staff Appreciation goes to...Ailie! Ailie teaches English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at AAFSC's flagship center on Atlantic Avenue.

We're nominating her for her exceptional dedication and support in helping students succeed. Her guidance has made a meaningful impact on the students' learning journeys by creating a classroom environment where students feel safe to make mistakes, laugh, and support each other. This has led to noticeable growth not just in students' language skills but in their overall confidence. Students have expressed appreciation for how welcoming and encouraging her classes are, which is a reflection of the relationships she builds with them.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. At AAFSC, we support survivors and work to prevent future violence across all five boroughs through NYC’s Family Justice Centers, providing safety planning, counseling and legal referrals, housing support, and community-based resources to help survivors build stability.
