Central Park Zoo

The Central Park Zoo is part of an effort to save wildlife that began 120 years ago with the creation of the New York Zoological Society, an organization founded on science and hope which has since grown to become the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Eye on the prize. Knicks in five! 💙 🧡

The toco toucan, with its strikingly large, vibrant orange beak, bright blue eye ring and distinctive black and white plumage, is a true icon of Brazil’s rich biodiversity. At the Central Park Zoo, we have two toco toucans at the entrance to Tropic Zone.

DYK Charlie and Dory are rescued California sea lions? They joined the WCS parks family on June 12, 2013. On this special day, we are sharing their rescue story for all our newer followers.

In 2013, California experienced significant sea lion stranding events. As a result, thousands of young sea lion pups were found emaciated and needing emergency care. The Wildlife Conservation Society () worked with the Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute to receive Charlie and Dory after they were recovered but deemed non-releasable back to the wild. WCS staff flew out to California to transport these two females back to WCS parks. On arrival, they were quarantined at the Bronx Zoo and then were transferred to Prospect Park Zoo together in July 2013. In November, Charlie was moved to Central Park Zoo and Dory stayed at Prospect Park Zoo until 2017. In 2017, Dory was moved to where she became part of the breeding program at WCS and gave birth to a pup that same year. To ensure the sea lion population across WCS parks remains sustainable and genetically healthy, individuals are periodically moved between locations.

Since 2013, they have fascinated guests and brought joy to our keepers ever since! Swim on over to the Central Park Zoo to see Charlie or New York Aquarium to see Dory!

How do we train our grizzly bears to accept a blood draw from veterinarians? With lots of patience, care, and yummy treats!

As we showed you last year, all three of our grizzly bears have been trained to position (station) so that our veterinary staff can obtain blood samples from them without the need for sedation. This training occurs in the bear's behind-the-scenes night quarters which has been designed to safely support this activity.

In this training, keepers station the bear to "scoot" legs into the openings allowing the veterinary technician to take a blood sample while the bear eats a food reward for maintaining its position. If the bear remains still once the needle is in place, it receives a higher value reward of marshmallow.

Do you know how macaroni penguins got their name? When English sailors first spotted them in the 18th century, the golden crests on the side of the penguins’ heads reminded the sailors of “macaroni dandies” - fashionable men of the period who wore flamboyant feathered hats. Their scientific name, Eudyptes chrysolophus, means good diver and golden crest, which does a better job of describing their exceptional swimming ability and distinctive, vibrant yellow head-plumes.

The Central Park Zoo welcomed a second newborn lamb to our flock of harlequin sheep! Say hello to Tiny Dancer, aka Tiny for short. The lamb was born on April 14 to mother, Thimble. Harlequins are small, docile sheep with a calm disposition. They are best known for the variety of colors in their coats and their fine wool. Next time you visit, look out for the two lambs in the Tisch Children’s Zoo.

Watch one of our snow leopards scent-marking in their exhibit. In the wild, snow leopards roam vast, mountainous terrains across Central Asia. They travel huge distances and rely on scent-marking—rubbing their cheeks on rocks, scratching the ground, or spraying urine—to mark their territory and leave signs for other snow leopards.

At the Central Park Zoo, our snow leopards use the same natural behaviors to communicate with one another.
