What is a Mbongi? 🛖✨ In the Kikongo language, a Mbongi is a traditional physical space—a communal house where the community gathers to discuss governance, resolve challenges, share meals, and collective wisdom. It is a space rooted in transparency, mutual respect, and shared purpose.

We are bringing this intentional practice to our gathering in Ghana. This is more than a conference; it’s a collective table where we strategize for global Black food systems.

On this 63rd anniversary of African Liberation Day, we are full of joy to announce the 2nd Global Black Food Sovereignty Mbongi and Cultural Tour, taking place from October 6–19, 2026, in the beautiful land of Ghana, West Africa!🇬🇭✨

Following the powerful foundations laid by our collective global community in 2025, this year’s Mbongi (a traditional space for gathering, governance, and collective wisdom) will once again unite food systems leaders, organizers, elders, and visionaries from across Africa and the Diaspora.

Together, we will deepen our connection to the land, share reparative agricultural practices, and fortify sustainable, independent food systems for Black communities globally. ✨

What to Expect:
🌍 Deep-Dive Mbongi Sessions: Collaborative strategy, knowledge exchanges, and policy discussions on global food sovereignty.
🌍 Cultural Immersion: Honoring our shared roots, exploring historic sites, and building lifelong community connections across Ghana.

DOROTHY HADLEY BAYEN ✨

Before there was social media…
before Pan-Africanism became a global conversation…
before “Black unity” became a slogan…

there was a Black American woman from Illinois who dedicated her life to Ethiopia, African liberation, and the unity of Black people worldwide.

Dorothy Hadley Bayen was born in Evanston, Illinois, educated at Northwestern University and Howard University, and became one of the most important Black American women connected to the Ethiopian liberation movement of the 1930s.

During the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, she lived in Addis Ababa, became a war correspondent for the New York Amsterdam News, and helped tell the story of Ethiopia’s struggle to Black America.

When Ethiopia was under attack, Dorothy Bayen did not stand on the sidelines.

She organized.
She wrote.
She mobilized.
She helped awaken Harlem and Black America to the importance of defending African sovereignty.

Together with Dr. Malaku Bayen and the support of Harlem organizers, she helped build the Ethiopian World Federation in New York in 1937.

At a time when many institutions ignored African suffering, Dorothy believed that the future of Black people across the world was connected.

She understood that Ethiopia represented:

- dignity,
- independence,
- African nationhood,
- and hope for Black people everywhere.

In one of her writings, she expressed that the redemption of Ethiopia and the unity of Black people were connected struggles.

She was not just “the wife of a movement leader.”

She was:
a journalist,
an organizer,
a strategist,
a nation builder,
and one of the Black American women who helped lay foundations for modern Pan-African consciousness.

Today we honor Dorothy Hadley Bayen —
a daughter of Black America whose vision stretched from Chicago and Harlem all the way to Ethiopia. 🌍✨
