South Asian Council for Social Services

South Asian Council for Social Services SACSS's mission is to empower and integrate underserved immigrants into the economic and civic life of NYC

South Asian Council for Social Services [SACSS] was founded in 2000 in response to critical issues raised around the tremendous barriers to social services faced by New York City’s fast-growing South Asian community. Since then, we have become a trusted community institution serving over a million immigrant New Yorkers. Our mission is to empower and integrate underserved South Asians and all immig

rants into NYC's economic and civic life. We meet the needs of our vibrant, diverse community with free services in 20 languages our staff members speak: Hindi, Bengali, Urdu, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Nepali, Cantonese, Mandarin, Hakka, Malay, Spanish, French, Haitian Creole and Tagalog.

We were proud to join Asian American Federation and RISE partners on Thursday at City Hall, urging New York City Council to fully fund the at $3.5 million dollars in the FY2027 Budget!

RISE is not just a legal services network. It’s a lifeline for Asian immigrant New Yorkers who rely on trusted community organizations for reliable legal support in their languages. When immigrant families are forced to wait months for legal help, the consequences can be devastating. Asian immigrants make up nearly 30% of NYC’s non-citizen population, yet community-based legal providers lack the resources to meet demand. New York City Council must fully fund the at $3.5 million.

Thank you Council Members , Linda Lee, CM Alexa Avilés, Tiffany Cabán, Council Member Harvey Epstein, State Senator John C. Liu, and staff from Speaker Julie Menin’s team for joining us today and taking the time to hear how RISE funding has directly impacted the lives of everyday Asian New Yorkers. We’re counting on your support to fully fund the for the FY2027 Budget!

We successfully completed the final session of the self-defense program through the Hope Against Hate Campaign by the Asian American Federation and the NYC Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes.

Led by Andre Maldonado these sessions drew strong participation and actively equip people with practical ways to protect themselves and support those around them. The classes are designed for beginners, where participants learn about 5 D’s of being a bystander, verbal de-escalation strategies, non-violent communication strategies and physical self-defense strategies.

We are so proud of everyone who volunteered to receive the training to protect oneself and the community around them. 💙

Thank you for bringing this important training to SACSS
