Italy Bans Lab-Grown, Synthetic Meat. Italy's government approved a bill banning the use of laboratory-produced food and animal feed as it aims to safeguard the country's agri-food heritage, its agriculture minister told a news conference after a Cabinet meeting. Agriculture lobby Coldiretti praised the move against "synthetic food", saying a ban is needed to safeguard home production "from the attacks of multinational companies".
GMO/Toxin Free USA supports this move. We fully support finding sustainable solutions to the world's over-consumption of conventionally produced animals coming from inhumane, polluting factory farm CAFOs (concentrated animal feeding operations). But the lab-grown, synthetic food sector is not out to save the world as they pretend. They're out to own the food system with patented products that aren't any healthier than what comes from the dirty, conventional food system. It's not small farmers and producers, or consumers that will benefit. The billionaires like Bill Gates, the Bayer-Monsantos, and the Cargills who are already destroying our world with their current practices and products will be the only beneficiaries. This is not a path we should be championing for the future of our food system. We need a system that's democratic, fair, and healthy for all humans, animals, and the environment, and one that makes clean, healthy food a human right. We can and should do better.
