Twenty-five years later, the images still speak for themselves.

The Twin Towers were part of New York’s skyline, but they were also part of everyday life in the city. People worked there, visited, passed by them, photographed them, and saw them every day without thinking twice about it.

Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and everyone whose lives were changed that day.

On July 14, 1970, the Young Lords and community activists took over the old Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx, demanding better healthcare for the largely Black and Puerto Rican community it served.

The occupation brought attention to the conditions inside the hospital and helped push the demand for a new, better-equipped Lincoln Hospital.

In memory of Dolly Parton.

These photographs, taken by David Gahr in New York City in 1976, capture Dolly during a time when her career was changing quickly. She had already made a name for herself in country music, but the bigger world was starting to take notice, and New York was becoming part of that journey.

There’s something special about seeing her here, walking through the city at a time when she was still a young star figuring out just how far her music could take her. Decades later, she would become one of the most loved and recognizable artists in the world, but these photographs capture a much earlier Dolly, right in the middle of it all.

On August 5, 1998, AngloGold made history as the first South African company to list on the New York Stock Exchange. To mark the occasion, the company brought a rather unusual guest to Wall Street: a lion, matching the animal in its logo.

Summer Mischief, New York Style

There was a time when the street was the place to be. Kids ran around, made up games, got into trouble, and somehow turned an ordinary New York sidewalk into their own playground.

Tupac Shakur on 183rd & Creston, The Bronx, 1986

Before the records, the fame, and the name 2Pac, there was just a teenage Tupac in New York.

Photographed around East 183rd Street and Creston Avenue in the Bronx in 1986, this is a glimpse of Tupac during the years he spent in New York with his mother, Afeni Shakur. Long before he became one of hip-hop’s most recognizable figures, he was just another kid in the city, boombox in hand.
