HAPPY 251st BIRTHDAY: UNITED STATES ARMY 14 June 1775- 14 June 2026

The Continental Congress approves the formation of an Army. What began as a small force of Light Infantry has become perhaps the most powerful Army in the World. It has served this nation across four centuries of our history.

Below is the resolution that began the United States Army:

“Resolved, That six companies of expert riflemen, be immediately raised in Pen[n]sylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia; that each company consist of a captain, three lieutenants, four serjeants, four corporals, a drummer or trumpeter, and sixty-eight privates.

That each company, as soon as compleated, shall march and join the army near Boston, to be there employed as light infantry, under the command of the chief Officer in that army.

That the pay of the Officers and privates be as follows, viz. a captain @ 20 dollars per month; a lieutenant @ 13 1/3 dollars; a serjeant @ 8 dollars; a corporal @ 7 1/3 dollars; drummer or [trumpeter] @ 7 1/3 doll.; privates @ 6 2/3 dollars; to find their own arms and cloaths.”

That the form of the enlistment be in the following words:

I have, this day, voluntarily enlisted myself, as a soldier, in the American continental army, for one year, unless sooner discharged: And I do bind myself to conform, in all instances, to such rules and regulations, as are, or shall be, established for the government of the said Army.

60 YEARS AGO TODAY: 12 June 1966 VIETNAM
Sergeant Ralph Rogers, 1st Amphibious Tractor Battalion, 3rd Marine Division
Sgt. Rogers was company maintenance chief, and as he puts it “We served as both infantry Marines and mechanics.” When one ended the other began.” On 12 June 1966, he was manning the .50 caliber machine gun on his amtrack as they were moving from one place to another. The amtrack struck a mine, throwing Sgt. Rogers and the machine gun in front of the vehicle. The machine gun landed on him. When he regained consciousness, he thought he was dead, then realized he had survived! He subsequently recovered and returned to Vietnam for a second tour in 1968.

KOREA 75 YEARS AGO TODAY: 8 June 1951

Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Alfred D. Trombly’s actions resulted in his being the Navy Cross. Below is the citation for his Navy Cross:

:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Hospital Corpsman Third Class Alfred D. Trombly… United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy of the United Nations while serving as a Corpsman with a Marine Company of the Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 8 June 1951. Serving as a Medical Corpsman, Hospital Corpsman Third Class Trombly advanced with his company into enemy terrain when the unit was subjected to an intense barrage of enemy mortar and artillery fire, causing numerous casualties. Courageously and with complete disregard for his personal safety, he refused to take cover from the vicious hail of bursting shells and shrapnel, and despite a serious wound in the leg, crawled from fallen man to fallen man, coolly administering first aid. When the enemy fire increased in intensity, he threw himself over two wounded comrades, using his own body as a shield to protect them. He was again seriously wounded in the back by shrapnel, but despite the excruciating pain of his wounds, he continued fearlessly to administer aid to the wounded, refusing aid for himself until all other casualties had been properly cared for. Hospital Corpsman Third Class Trombly's display of outstanding courage and devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

THE ROLL OF HONOR: PRESERVING AND SHARING THE STORIES OF PURPLE HEART RECIPEINTS WITH YOUR HELP.
If you are or know a Purple Heart recipient, help us to preserve their history and commemorate their sacrifices by enrolling in the Roll of Honor database.

WHAT IS THE ROLL OF HONOR?
The Roll of Honor is a database of Purple Heart recipients created and managed exclusively by the Hall of Honor as there is no comprehensive list of Purple Heart recipients in existence. The goal is to develop as comprehensive a list as possible, but we need your help to enroll recipients as we continue to build that database. Recipients, their families or even friends can enroll someone in the Roll of Honor.

HOW CAN A RECIPIENT BE ENROLLED?
You can download an enrollment form from our website enrollment link: (https://www.thepurpleheart.com/enrollment/ ). Or if you prefer, you can call us at 845-561-1765 and we can mail you the enrollment form. Once you have the form, you can fill it out and include official documentation verification that the award was made and return it to the Hall of Honor. We will send an acknowledgment letter to let you know when the enrollment has been completed. If you have any questions about the process, please give us a call at 845-561-1765.

Memorial Day (Traditional)
The origins of Memorial Day go back to the Civil War era. After the War ended, there were local observances to decorate the graves of those who had fallen during the conflict. In 1868, John A. Logan, Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, called for a day to recognize all those who fell in defense of the Nation.
Today, we commemorate all who have died in service to our nation. The poem below pays homage to the origin of this observance and is as relevant today as it was 160 years ago.

IRAN-IRAQ WAR: 39 YEARS AGO TODAY 17 May 1987

USS Stark (FFG 31) Incident

The guided missile frigate USS Stark (FFG 31) was in international waters in the Persian Gulf during the latter stages of the Iran-Iraq War. The U.S. was supporting Iraq with war material during the conflict and saw Iraq as an ally. At approximately 9:00 p.m. local time, Stark was hit by two Exocet missiles fired by an Iraqi fighter aircraft. The resulting damage took the lives of 37 crew members of the ship including Electronics Technician Second Class Christopher DeAngelis. Petty Officer DeAngelis is a featured recipient in our Ultimate Sacrifice Gallery at the Hall of Honor.

ARMED FORCES DAY: 16 MAY 2026:
76 years ago today, Armed Forces Day was first celebrated by order of President Truman, honoring all those in military service. The following two quotes speak to the importance of this day.

"Our Servicemen and women are serving throughout the world as guardians of peace--many of them away from their homes, their friends and their families. They are visible evidence of our determination to meet any threat to the peace with measured strength and high resolve. They are also evidence of a harsh but inescapable truth--that the survival of freedom requires great cost and commitment, and great personal sacrifice."

President John F. Kennedy, 1963

"The heritage of freedom must be guarded as carefully in peace as it was in war. Faith, not suspicion, must be the key to our relationships. Sacrifice, not selfishness, must be the eternal price of liberty. Vigilance, not appeasement, is the byword of living freedoms..."

General Omar N. Bradley
Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
