Friends,

Due to inclement weather, today’s advent service at the Shrine has been cancelled.

Thank you for your interest in the work of the Strawbridge Shrine as we strive to preserve, interpret, and share the founding story of American Methodism through the life and legacy of Robert Strawbridge.

We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a joyful New Year.

Coming soon, it's the annual Strawbridge Shrine Advent Service. This year, we are offering two opportunities to worship in the Log meeting House. See the flyer below for details.

Because this is a popular event, we ask you to call our curator ahead of time to let us know you plan to attend.

May the blessings of the Advent season be yours as we prepare to welcome the newborn King.

Friends of the Strawbridge Shrine,

Our 2025 ornaments are in and they look great! This year's ornament depicts the ca. 1764 Log Meeting House that stood just a couple of miles from the current Shrine site. This was the first Methodist meeting house in what was then British North America. The ornaments are available to order now through our online store for $20 apiece. You can also buy it together with last year's Robert Strawbridge House ornament for $35.

If you are at the Baltimore Washington Annual Conference this week, you can purchase both ornaments at our display table.

Give the gift of Methodist history with a Strawbridge Shrine ornament.

I had the pleasure of speaking to a group of retired UM clergy, clergy spouses, widows, and widowers (plus one retired Disciples of Christ pastor) at Charlestown Retirement community in Catonsville last night. The topic of my talk was Jacob Toogood, an enslaved African American who became a Methodist preacher and very likely won his freedom in the early 1790s. Thanks to Jackson Day for his work in genealogy that led to learning more about Jacob, for graciously hosting me, and for allowing me to have such an engaging evening talking about Methodist history.

On Saturday, March 15, the Strawbridge Shrine was pleased to host a group from the Korean Methodist Church, Chung-Cheong Annual Conference. The group is touring Methodist historic sites as part of their observance of the 140th anniversary of the founding of Methodism in Korea. We wish our South Korean brothers and sisters well on their journey as they explore the US sites and stories that helped shaped Methodism.

The Strawbridge Shrine Association held its annual meeting on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Ward's Chapel UMC in Randallstown, Maryland. We were welcomed warmly by Pastor Steven Cho and members of the Ward's Chapel congregation. Our meeting featured a time for worship and a keynote speech by Baltimore-Washington Conference Director of Museums and Pilgrimage Rev. Bonnie McCubbin on the value of Methodist class meetings. Shrine Association Vice President Bob Kells gave a presentation on Jacob Toogood, the first African American Methodist preacher, who, as we learned, won his freedom from enslavement. Thanks to everyone who made the annual meeting such a wonderful experience. We had a good 2024 and we look forward to an even better 2025!
