Sheriff Jason Seidl of Brown County announced today the commencement of the Law Enforcement Scholarship Program for 2026. Sheriff Seidl proudly announced that the MSA Board of Directors has established a scholarship fund for the awarding of up to 18 - $2,000 scholarships for this year. These scholarships are due to the coordinated efforts of the 87 elected Sheriffs of the State of Minnesota.

The MSA gives special recognition to the financial needs of students attending the peace officer skills course or one of the two- or four-year law enforcement degree programs around the state. “The MSA Board of Directors acknowledges the current challenges in recruiting and greatly appreciates the individuals who decide to serve others through a career in law enforcement. This is one way that we can support that honorable decision,” said Deputy Director Brian Johnson.

The MSA recognizes the importance of pre-entry training for people considering law enforcement as their career choice. The MSA also acknowledges that some students may need outside help in meeting the costs of such training, even though they excel academically.

The MSA Scholarship Committee, in making its selection of awards, intends to achieve representation from all geographical areas of the state. The scholarship deadline is November 30th, 2026. Awards will be announced on the MSA web page and on social media at the start of 2027. Application forms and a statement of procedures are available at the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, 15 S. Washington St. New Ulm, MN.

Scholarships are only available to students currently enrolled in one of the following three categories:

1. Mandated POST Skills Program
2. In their second year of a two-year law enforcement program.
3. In their third or fourth year of a four-year college criminal justice program.

To qualify, students must have completed at least one year of the two-year program or two years of a four-year program. Students meeting these criteria are invited to obtain a scholarship application form from their local sheriff’s office or online at

Type of Incident:
Brown County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of a new scam involving our jail and when people are added to its roster.

Details of Incident:
Reports were made that state once someone new is added to the Brown County Jail Roster, that their parents or family members are called and the scammer asks for money. When the family checks the roster, it shows that the individual is indeed newly in jail.

What does a real situation look like for someone who was picked up by law enforcement on a warrant or who was arrested and has a bail option?

The person with the warrant has contact with law enforcement (traffic stop, appeared in court, arrested at their house, turned themselves in, etc) and it is discovered that they have a warrant. The warrant may be “body only” in which the person cannot bail out and must be taken into custody and appear in front of a Judge. If the warrant has a bail amount, the individual may post the bail and sign a Promise to Appear at a later court date and time. Posting bail may be done by either paying the cash amount or contacting a bail bondsman to post the bail on their behalf. The law enforcement agency that took the cash or bail will receipt the money and route the money to the Court in which the warrant was issued out of. What if someone is arrested in another county such as Koochiching County (International Falls, Minnesota) and the family is here in Brown County? You can come to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and we can verify the warrant and the bail amount, we can take the cash bail, have you sign the bail forfeiture notice, receipt the money and route the money and paperwork to the Koochiching County Court Administrator’s Office to take care of the warrant.

Law Enforcement will never request that bail be posted with PayPal, phone cards, Amazon gift cards, iTunes cards or other gift cards.

Scammers will ask for PayPal accounts, phone cards, Amazon gift cards, iTunes cards, other gift cards as well as money orders. Legitimate businesses will not ask for payment via phone cards, Amazon gift cards, iTunes cards as well as other gift cards.

What should you do if you have been contacted by a scammer?

If you did not answer the call and only received a voice message, you do not need to report it.

If you answered the call and only spoke to the scammer without sending money or giving personal information, you do not need to report it. Be aware that the scammers take notes and may have noted that your number is a “good number” as you are a potential future victim for fraud.

If you answered the call and you sent money or gave out personal information you should report it. You should contact your bank or credit card company fraud department and law enforcement to make a report of the fraud and/or loss of money.

Be on the lookout!
What should you do if you hit a deer/wild animal?
1. Remain calm, pull over to the side of the road and assess the damage.
2. If you are not hurt and your vehicle has minimal damage, you can contact your insurance agency to let them know what happened.
3. If you are hurt/injured, call 911
4. If your vehicle is badly damaged and you need help, pull over to the side of the road and call our non-emergency line at (507) 233-6700.
We will ask you questions such as: Are you hurt? Where are you located? Is the deer still alive? Where did it go? How extensive is the damage? Is the vehicle still drivable? Etc.
Sometimes animal calls can just be handled over the phone with an incident number for your insurance agency and sometimes law enforcement will need to come and assess the damage. When in doubt, just call.

Many fawns in our region are born in May and June, but by July they are active enough to start traveling alongside their mothers. Since they are still very young and highly unpredictable, they frequently lag behind or suddenly dart into the road. This makes July a notorious "secondary peak" for deer-vehicle crashes. Staying alert and knowing how to react can prevent a serious crash and ensure a safe commute.

Quick Tips for Driving Safely This Season:
- Where there’s one, expect more: Deer rarely travel alone. If one crosses the road, expect more to follow.
- Scan the shoulders: Keep your eyes moving along roadsides and ditches, especially near woods, farm fields and water.
- Know peak hours: Deer are most active at dawn and dusk. Reduce speeds and stay alert during these lower-visibility hours.
- Do not swerve: If a collision is unavoidable, brake firmly and stay in the lane. Swerving can lead to a more dangerous crash.
- Use high beams: When oncoming traffic is clear, use high beams to illuminate ditches and catch the reflection of deer eyes early.

Staying focused on the road, managing speeds, and choosing defensive driving habits can ensure every trip ends with a safe return home. Together, we can drive Minnesota toward zero deaths.
