New Ulm Community Garden

New Ulm Community Garden The New Ulm Community Garden at Putting Green is a place where people grow their own healthy produce

The community garden site was formerly Growing Green MiniFarm, a collaborative project of two local nonprofits. MRCI Worksource, provider of jobs for adults with disabilities, and Putting Green, an environmental learning center, joined forces in 2007 and started the Growing Green CSA (community supported agriculture). In 2012, it was decided due to the cost of labor, it was no longer economically

feasible to operate the CSA. This decision created an opportunity for a new venture to emerge - the New Ulm Community Garden, capitalizing on the infrastructure in place from the Growing Green project.

Because of the wet conditions so far there isn’t any screened dirt available yet. Maybe later this week. It will be delivered when available.

Garden plots have been tilled! Still need to till the raised beds. Worked up pretty good given how wet it is. But rain continues in the forecast!

Will be getting a load of black dirt. Please use that to raise the plots if needed. Use the compost to mix in to enrich the soil.

Ground is very wet at garden currently. Needs to dry out some before we till or will have hard dirt clods that will not be a good seed bed. All gardens were tilled in the fall (unless you requested no tilling). Hopefully will get some sun and warmth to help dry things.

Thanks to Dr Luke Albrecht! He turned the compost piles this morning. He has done this several times a year for the past several years. Under all the garden waste things have been breaking down nicely! Compost ready to use is now on the right. Put new materials to compost in the middle. Don’t add any additional material to the pile on left as it will continue to break down and be ready for next year!

The New Ulm Community Garden is looking good. It's still early but it looks like a good season this year. The plots are all tilled, the water is hooked up, the fencing and cages have been cleaned up, the main water station and sink have been improved, a new sign is up above the front gate, and new load of wood chips has been brought in by Kraus tree service. Hope everyone has a enjoyable and bountiful year.
