RECONCILIATION BILL UPDATE: Some Good News – But We're Not in the Clear Yet
Thanks to grassroots pressure from landowners, farmers, and advocates across the Midwest, Congress is expected to REMOVE a dangerous provision from the federal reconciliation bill that would have stripped states of their authority to permit pipelines. That means Summit Carbon Solutions won’t be able to bypass North Dakota’s laws using federal siting authority. 💪
👏 This is a win for property rights, local control, and everyone who stood up and spoke out.
But we’re not celebrating yet. The reconciliation bill is still loaded with threats to our rural communities, small farmers, and working families, including:
🔻 Billions in giveaways through the 45Q carbon tax credit, which props up risky projects like Summit’s pipeline.
🔻 $230 billion in cuts to conservation and agricultural programs, including EQIP, CRP, and support for sustainable practices.
🔻 Deep cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, harming rural access to health care and food security.
🔻 “Pay-to-play” permitting, letting corporations skip environmental review by paying a fee.
🔻 Weakened clean water, air, and public health protections, especially those regulating oil, gas, coal, and factory farms.
This bill may be “big and beautiful” to some in Congress, but to us, it’s still a big mess.
We’ll keep fighting to strip out these corporate handouts and protect the people who actually live here. Stay tuned — and stay loud. 💥
