Come learn all about Marine Discovery Center’s Shuck and Share program you heard of at last weeks city commission meeting. Important to remember, this lecture will not be at Marine Discovery Center’s location but will be hosted at our friend’s, Riverside Conservancy’s location - 1413 S. Riverside Drive at 1:00 pm and free to the public! Please come and hear how important this project is to our waterways/coastal ecosystems!

Marine Discovery Center launched its Shuck & Share program in 2013, which has recycled more than one million pounds of oyster shells since that time. MDC’s Tess Sailor-Tynes will talk about

I had the pleasure of speaking with a group of neighbors at Sugar Mill Country Club this week. Their message was clear: sprawl development, flooding, infrastructure challenges, quality of life and the recent waste management and recycling decision are top of mind. All valid concerns and ones that I share. To me, leadership is about listening first, taking the time to understand from all angles and then making decisions that will protect the character of our community while planning thoughtfully and carefully for the future. If this resonates with you Like and Share. We are setting dates for meet and greets. I would love to come talk to you and your group. Send us a message and we will connect to set the time!

A Busy week! I always love attending the State of luncheons hosted by SEV Chamber! This was the State of the County. We heard from Danny Robbins and Sheriff Mike Chitwood. They both gave us updates on the priorities, challenges and opportunities that are important in Volusia County and by extension us here in NSB. The technologies and innovations Sheriff Chitwood is bringing to Volusia County, in our schools and beyond play a major roll in keeping us safe and maintaining our quality of life.

Last night was a robust City Commission meeting. I love how our community comes together on issues that are important to them. After proclamations and recognition of Juneteenth coming up on the 19th, May being Historic preservation month and the NSB Middle School Student of the month, the community spoke passionately about the change in waste management companies and moving recycling to a voluntary self drop service at 2 locations. I even spoke to the fact that we needed to take a moment to really consider all impacts to our city; financially, environmentally and the community service engagement from WastePro, our existing provider. Among many other contributions to NSB in terms of time, talent and dollars, WastePro is instrumental to Marine Discovery Center in helping restore oyster reefs in our lagoon, which we all know aids in the water quality. There is so much more than just the lowest price to consider. For me, even as a business owner and cost conscious accountant, this was not about the options that costs less, it’s about the full value being delivered. Price is not always the obvious element. In the end, the commission voted 4-1 to proceed with contract negotiations with the new provider… with Mayor Fred Cleveland being the 1 vote to take a pause in this process. I respect all the work that went into this process by the city staff. It is no small task!

What a beautiful service for Memorial Day at the Brannon Center. I was reminded that as a tight knit community, we feel the reasons and purpose more profoundly! General Patton said “we shouldn’t mourn those lost, but be grateful they lived.” We are Land of the Free because of our servicemen and women! With so much gratitude….have a blessed day.

On this day of remembrance, my thoughts always go to my dad, Leo Amaral. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. And while he didn’t lose his life in action, he lost many friends while there. I’ll never forget the one and only conversation we had about his time in the service. He said “No one should see the things I saw”. So today, reflect on the freedom we have and remember we are the land of the free because of the brave… because of those that gave their lives for our country. Always remember.

The decisions made by City Commissioners impact our daily lives, from public safety and infrastructure to responsible development, conservation, environmental preservation, budgets, and the future of our city.

I believe in listening to residents, showing up for our community, and helping build a strong future for our city.
