Is your teen heading to Block Island for the Fourth of July?
Have a conversation before they leave. Know their plans, and make sure they understand that the New Shoreham Police Department will be strictly enforcing laws related to underage drinking and alcohol possession on our beaches.
The 4th of July on Block Island is a special experience, but in recent years, large groups of teenagers have arrived on Block Island with alcohol, resulting in excessive intoxication, medical emergencies, disorderly behavior, and thousands of pounds of trash left behind on our beaches. These incidents place a significant strain on our police, fire, and EMS personnel and detract from everyone's ability to enjoy the holiday safely.
This year, additional public safety resources will be on duty throughout the holiday weekend, and there will be zero tolerance for alcohol on the beaches. Alcohol will be confiscated, and violators will be cited.
☑ Individuals ages 18 to 20 will be cited for underage possession of alcohol and possession of alcohol where prohibited.
☑ Adults age 21 and older will be cited for possession of alcohol where prohibited.
☑ Children under age 18 will be cited for underage possession of alcohol and possession of alcohol where prohibited. They will be released only to a parent or legal guardian, who must appear in person at the New Shoreham Police Department (1/3 of a mile, up a hill, very warm day).
