When I arrived at the tree farm Friday morning the temperature was -1 F. The high for the day was 11 F. Really cold temperatures may not be easy to work in but are ideal for harvesting timber. At temperatures below 10 F, the ground in the forest freezes solid several inches thick. The frozen ground supports the heavy equipment, allows for unimpeded access, and provides a base for the skidding logs. For the day, 7 trees were harvested, yielding 13 logs...a very productive day!
