When I arrived at the tree farm Friday morning the temperature was -1 F. The high for the day was 11 F. Really cold temperatures may not be easy to work in but are ideal for harvesting timber. At temperatures below 10 F, the ground in the forest freezes solid several inches thick. The frozen ground supports the heavy equipment, allows for unimpeded access, and provides a base for the skidding logs. For the day, 7 trees were harvested, yielding 13 logs...a very productive day!

After several years of trial and error, we have finally succeeded in growing Red Oak with an acceptable loss of < 10%. The key to our success was seeding the acorn in an inverted scorched tin can with a notched hole in the bottom. This arrangement protects the acorn from predation by squirrels, mice, and birds; allowing undisturbed germination. The developing seedling grows through the hole and develops into a young sapling. With time, the can will rust and disintegrate, releasing iron into the soil for the developing young tree...🌱🌞👍

On June 22 1999 after six weeks of near continuous work, a two man crew concluded a commercial harvest of timber on our tree farm. In total, 519 trees were harvested, yielding 1,272 logs or a measured 124,092 bdft. (put end to end that would yield a board 1" thick x 12" wide x 23.5 miles long). Below is load 29 out of a total of 30 truck loads, moving through our tree farm on the way to the sawmill.

FLASH FLOOD...☹️🤬🥵! An unpleasant surprise this morning. The drive into the tree farm is absolutely choked with 20 acres of corn chaff from my neighbors field. The result of 2 1/2 inches of rain in less than an hour from Wednesday’s storm front.

We recently delivered 49 low grade logs to Kevin Coomer Pallet Inc. in Darlington Indiana. These logs were processed into over 500 pallets. Pictured below is the delivery, unloading, and some of the pallets obtained from our logs. As of this post, we do not know who purchased the pallets but were informed that they could be used in various industrial applications or in the transport of various finished products or food items.

The White Ash featured below was the last tree selected for harvest this winter. In total we harvested 67 trees, ranging from 8" to 24" in diameter, yielding a total log length of about 1700'. The harvest breakdown was 31 Chinese Elm, 22 White Ash, 7 American Elm, 3 Black Cherry, 3 Osage Orange, and 1 Sugar Maple. Over the next several weeks the logs will be selected and graded. The highest quality logs will be processed into grade lumber and the lower quality logs will be sold for pallet material or firewood.

The following photos detail some of our daily operations at our facility. From harvesting, skidding, milling, to the kiln; we can process standing timber to dried rough cut lumber.

We are often asked, "If you planted a tree today how long would it take until you could harvest the tree, yielding grade lumber?" The answer is always the same; "it depends”. Many factors influence the growth rate of a tree: species, soil or site index, competition, water, sunlight, and nutrient availability. I recently harvested the White Ash featured below. This tree had a DBH (diameter) of 22” and an overall height of about 80’. The measured log length was 30’, giving about 300 board feet of lumber. Much to my surprise, a post harvest ring count revealed that this tree was only 67 years old. WOW!

We are returning to our ROOTS. Once again, we are growing seedlings. Twenty years ago, what started as a simple hobby in our backyard has BLOSSOMED into a family owned and operated business. Pictured below are four month old Black Walnut seedlings. We are offering a single seedling free to anyone who has an interest and love of trees. There are no strings attached just contact us. At Droste Forest Products, growing trees is our passion.

Over the next week, we will be processing a number of Black Walnut logs into 4/4 and 8/4 lumber on our Wood-Mizer sawmill. The log featured below is an 8' log that was cut into 4/4 plain sawn lumber. The board width range obtained from this log was 9 to 5 inches.
