This week, New Prague students will be returning to school! Good luck to all the students starting in a new building or returning to a familiar one. We hope everyone has a great start to the school year — parents included!

Keep an eye out for NPPD. You can expect to see NPPD squads and officers in and around our schools regularly as part of our normal patrol functions. We’re also continuing to build relationships with students, staff, and families throughout our community. Our School Resource Officer works specifically within the schools as well.

School buses will be out and about, too. Our bus drivers do a great job keeping students safe, but we need everyone’s help.

Across Minnesota, it’s a dangerous and all-too-common sight: a driver passing a school bus with red lights flashing as the stop arm extends.

Minnesota’s school-bus stopping rules have changed to make the requirement clearer:

Drivers must stop at least 20 feet away when a school bus has flashing red lights — even if the stop arm has not yet extended.

The first violation carries a $500 fine.

But more importantly, failing to stop can put children’s lives at risk.

Put your phone down.
Pay attention.
Stop for school buses.
Help us keep our kids safe.

Have a safe and successful school year, New Prague!

We’ve heard from members of our community, our officers have also observed some concerns regarding the safe operation of e-bikes and e-scooters in New Prague. We know e-bikes, e-scooters, and other electric personal assistive mobility devices (EPAMDs) are becoming an increasingly popular way to get around, and we want to make sure everyone, riders, drivers, pedestrians, and families can enjoy our community safely.

With that in mind, we’re sharing some important information applicable traffic laws, and responsible riding practices. Our goal isn’t to discourage e-bike use, but to help everyone understand how we can safely share the road, trails, and sidewalks.

Important Mosquito Control Update for New Prague Residents

The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (MMCD) is using drones this year to treat wetlands for mosquito larvae. We want to make sure our residents are informed and comfortable if they see drone activity or MMCD staff in the area.
Drones have become a valuable tool for mosquito control, helping reach more breeding sites while keeping staff safer. Here’s what you should know:

Drones apply a dry granule to areas of standing water. The active ingredient specifically targets mosquito larvae and is not harmful to people, pets, or wildlife.

Drones fly at 150–200 feet above wetlands during treatment.

The drone pilot always maintains direct visual (eye) contact with the drone.

MMCD staff will be wearing bright yellow high-visibility vests that say “Public Health Mosquito Control.”

MMCD makes every effort to avoid flying over private property, but it is sometimes unavoidable when treating wetlands. Staff may also knock on nearby doors to personally notify residents.

If you see a drone or have any questions, please know this is part of a normal, approved public health program.

If you have any concerns, feel free to contact the New Prague Police Department or MMCD directly.

Thank you for helping us keep New Prague safe and informed!

With warmer weather here, we’re seeing more e-bikes and e-scooters out on our roads and trails. These are fun, convenient ways to get around, but they come with important responsibilities.
To keep everyone safe — riders, pedestrians, and drivers alike — please take a moment to review the Rules of the Road for e-bikes and e-scooters attached to this post.

Safe riding is smart riding. Let’s all do our part to make New Prague a safe community for everyone on the road.
