City of New Philadelphia, OH

City of New Philadelphia, OH A city embracing family, safety, education and future growth. The City of New Philadelphia has a history as rich and colorful as the valley that surrounds it.

In 1804, John Knisely founded our town just west of the site of Schoenbrunn, a Moravian Indian missionary town. Taverns and merchants thrived here as the village was a focal point for travelers and settlers from the east. With the construction of the Ohio-Erie Canal, New Philadelphia became a marketing center for agricultural products and the canal provided water power for mills. The coming of rai

lroads led to coal mining and, eventually, to steel and manufacturing. Some other important dates in New Philadelphia history include the following:

In 1808, Tuscarawas County was formed creating the rivalry between Dover and New Philadelphia over competition for the county seat. New Philadelphia was incorporated Feb. 12, 1833 with the first elections being held on May 6 of that year. B.M. Atherton was elected as Mayor. In 1854, the first railroad was completed. In 1895, the village was advanced to the status of city. The census of that year listed New Philadelphia at 5,673 residents. In 1898, the public square was paved providing our city's first paved streets. New Philadelphia Public Schools opened Sept. 9, 1900 with 5 school buildings and an enrollment of 1,267 students. Quaker Stadium held it's first game on Sept.29, 1928. New Philadelphia Post Office was built in 1929, modeled after Independence Hall in Philadelphia. There are several famous Ohioans that have ties to our city. New Philadelphia was home to Ohio Governor Donahey. President McKinley was known to visit our town, and John Glenn did his initial flight training at Harry Clever Field here in New Philadelphia. College football legend Woody Hayes coached the Quakers in the late 1930's.

~ New Philadelphia Is a City of Champions

The news has traveled fast, but if you haven’t heard, Coach Jeremy Rodgers and the New Philadelphia Quakers Boys Track and Field team captured the Division 2 state title this past weekend. The Quakers’ achievement was powered by individual efforts by Wyatt Lendon, who won the 1600-meter state championship and Marcus Adelman, who won the 3200-meter state title. The parents, coaches and teachers of the team members also need to be recognized for the support and encouragement they gave the kids to pursue excellence. I ask that the coaches and team be invited to a future City Council meeting, so we can publicly recognize them for making New Philadelphia a City of Champions.

~ Broadway Brewhouse Update

City Code Administrator Josh Mathias informed me that work began today (Monday) to replace the roof on the Broadway Brewhouse building. Cranes will be used on the project, so expect that area of South Broadway to be temporarily blocked from traffic when necessary. Also, the sidewalk in front of the Brewhouse will remain closed while the work is being done. The building’s roof was damaged during a windstorm in March.

~ New State Funding for Southside Community Park Improvements

Thanks to the efforts of State Senator Al Landis and State Representative Jodi Salvo, the City of New Philadelphia will receive $250,000 from the State Capital Budget to fund improvements at the Southside Community Park. The grant will help complete the remaining phase 2 projects at the park, such as completion of the one-mile walking trail around the park’s perimeter and the extension of the entrance road to the high school soccer fields parking lot.

~ What to Do with the Canal Land the City Owns on Commercial Avenue

At tomorrow’s (Tuesday) monthly meeting, the City Planning Commission will discuss how to proceed with auctioning the old canal land the City owns on Commercial Avenue SE and SW. Since the Governor’s Deed restrictions have been removed and the parcels have business district zoning, they can be utilized for commercial development. The Commission needs to decide whether to sell the property as is or divide it to match the property lines of adjacent parcels.

~ The Abolish Property Tax Issue Won’t Make the November Election Ballot

The Ohio Municipal League and various news outlets have reported that organizers of the proposed constitutional amendment to eliminate Ohio property taxes announced they will not try to make the ballot in November 2026, but will instead continue gathering signatures and target the November 2027 ballot. They had not yet collected enough signatures to confidently meet the requirement of 413,488 valid signatures needed for ballot access. Meanwhile the public meetings to explain the consequences of property tax elimination continue. The next one, hosted by State Representative Jodi Salvo, is on Thursday, June 25th at 6pm at the Tuscarawas County Public Library on Fair Avenue NW.

~ ODOT Open House for Comments on the I-77/US 250/SR 39 Project

ODOT District 11 has scheduled another open house to gather more public input on the redesign of the I-77/US 250/SR 39 interchange on West High Avenue. The open house will be held on Tuesday, June 30th from 4pm to 7pm at Buckeye Career Center’s Joe Carlisle Café. Public feedback on the proposed improvements will help shape ODOT’s Alternatives Evaluation Report, which is required to finalize the project’s design. A similar open house was held at the same location last December.

COMING UP…

Flag Day is Sunday, June 14th.
Juneteenth is Friday, June 19th. City offices will be closed.

Mayor’s Report for Thursday May 28, 2026

~ Hobbyists…Here’s the Announcement You’ve Been Waiting For

Tori Noah, the general manager of New Towne Mall, has informed me that the Hobby Lobby store will officially open at 9am on Monday, June 1st. I’m awaiting word on whether there is going to be a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the occasion. Hobby Lobby is located in the former Elder-Beerman wing of the mall. The company opened its first store in Oklahoma City in 1972. Today, Hobby Lobby is the largest privately owned arts and crafts retailer in the world, with over 1,000 stores operating in 48 states.
Hobby Lobby joins Dick’s Sporting Goods, Kohl’s and Sephora, Ashley Furniture, Marshall’s and Ulta Beauty as the anchor stores at New Towne Mall.

~ As Ribbons Are Cut, New Philadelphia Grows

The new Inclusive Playground at Tuscora Park is a huge hit with kids. Since the playground’s ribbon-cutting and official opening this past Sunday, Parks Superintendent Adam Fulton has reported that the playground has been well used during park hours.

New businesses opened with ribbon-cutting ceremonies over the past two weeks: Toasted on the Square on the northwest downtown quadrant and Eagle HealthWorks on Monroe Avenue NW. It’s encouraging when local entrepreneurs open new businesses in our town. Their success depends on all of us shopping and dining locally whenever possible.

~ The Dirt on Union Avenue NW

The City and the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce have received numerous inquiries from people wanting to know about the dirt being spread across two lots in the 1100 block of Union Avenue NW. It’s fill dirt. The landowner has told us that there are no immediate plans for construction on the property.

~ Brownfield Grant Award Changes the Joy/Howden Redevelopment Timeline

As we learned last week, the Tuscarawas County Economic Development Corporation received a $300,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Development to conduct a Phase 2 environmental assessment of the Joy/Howden property on South Broadway. The property is owned by the County’s Economic Development and Finance Alliance (port authority). The work will begin as soon as possible. It will include concrete coring and soil and gas sampling. And it will determine whether further remediation must be included in the site’s redevelopment.
