Democracy Matters at SUNY New Paltz

Democracy Matters at SUNY New Paltz Students fighting to end the corrupting influence of money in politics at SUNY New Paltz!

Democracy Matters, a non-partisan campus-based national student organization, works to get big private money out of politics and people back in. Democracy Matters, was founded in 2001 by NBA basketball player, poet, and activist Adonal Foyle and his parents, Joan and Jay Mandle, both of whom are Colgate University professors and life-long organizers. Our mission is to strengthen democracy by: (1)

training young people how to be effective grassroots organizers and advocates, and (2) supporting public financing of election campaigns (“fair elections”) and other pro-democracy reforms. By focusing on money in politics, Democracy Matters organizes around a critical flaw in our democratic process. Through education, grassroots organizing, national conferences, political action and civic engagement, we are revolutionizing the way our democracy works and bringing power back to the people

Be careful out there. Educate yourselves.

Republican-led legislatures are trying to push through laws to criminalize dissent -- in the hopes of stopping the growing fight against the right.

Senators must do whatever it takes to protect our fundamental rights from Trump's dangerous agenda -- and that means making sure the Supreme Court stands by Roe v. Wade. Speak out now.

Hey all you Democracy Fighters. Although New Paltz is a small school in comparison to a lot of other state schools, we are afforded a lot of great opportunities. One of them is amazing speakers coming to campus to speak to us. This coming Tuesday, at 7:30 pm in LC100 Michael Moore is coming to lecture about the importance of us young people voting this upcoming election cycle. You are not going to want to miss out on hearing him speak. He also has a new movie out titled "Where to Invade Next." I would highly recommend seeing it if you haven't already, and seeing it again if you already have. It's just that good. That is being shown at 6pm on this upcoming Monday. I have included the flyer below that has more in-depth information.
I really hope to see all of you there this Monday and Tuesday. Bring your friends, your classmates, or a random stranger. I promise you will make your parents and friends who weren't there jealous.
If you have any questions feel free to ask.

The Youth Vote and the 2016 Election
A lecture by
MICHAEL MOORE

Academy Award winning filmmaker and best selling author MICHAEL MOORE will be speaking on the importance of the youth vote in the 2016 election. Young people make up an increasing share of the US population yet they have the lowest rates of voter participation of any age group.* At the same time the most pressing issues of the day, from climate change to student loan debt, will impact young people most severely. Moore brings his insightful political analysis and wry sense of humor to this lecture on why our fate rests on political mobilization among America’s youth.

Tuesday, September 20 at 7:30pm in Lecture Center 100, SUNY New Paltz

As a lead up to Michael Moore's visit we will be screening his most recent film "Where to Invade Next" on Monday, September 19 at 6:00 PM in Lecture Center 100.

All events are free and open to the public
