The Institute for Disaster Mental Health (IDMH) seeks to address the diversity of disaster mental health demands in the region, state, nation, and the global community so that all those impacted by disaster and trauma have access to the mental health support they need. To accomplish this goal, IDMH provides leadership to advance the field of disaster mental health and trauma response through train

ing, research, consultation, and service. IDMH works to establish and disseminate best practices in order to ensure that all disaster mental health services are evidence-supported and culturally sensitive.

Supporting the mental health of frontline professionals matters.

IDMH continues to partner with organizations across New York State to provide trainings focused on stress, resilience, self-care, and trauma-informed support. Most recently, IDMH developed a new curriculum on Individual & Collective Resilience in Response to Traumatic Stress Exposure for public health professionals. Building resilience strengthens individuals, teams, and communities.

Service-learning in action. IDMH recently led SUNY New Paltz students on a disaster recovery trip to Asheville, North Carolina, where they worked alongside communities recovering from Hurricane Helene. Through hands-on service, students gained a deeper understanding of resilience, recovery, and disaster mental health in practice. This annual trip is helping prepare the next generation of disaster responders through meaningful, community-centered experiences.
