Today, June 14, 2024 on this Flag Day, we honor and remember SPC Ross A. McGinnis on his birthday.

Ross Andrew McGinnis was born June 14, 1987 in Meadville, PA. His family moved to Knox when he was three. Growing up he was a member of the Boy Scouts, played basketball and soccer through the YMCA, and Little League baseball. Ross was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Knox, and a 2005 graduate of Keystone Junior-Senior High School.

Ross's interests included video games and mountain biking. He was also a car enthusiast, and took classes at the Clarion County Career Center in automotive technology. On his 17th birthday, June 14, 2004, Ross went to the Army recruiting station and joined through the delayed entry program.

McGinnis was assigned to 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment in Schweinfurt, Germany. The unit deployed to Eastern Baghdad in August 2006, where sectarian violence was rampant. Ross was serving as an M2 .50 caliber machine gunner in 1st Platoon, C Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment is support of operations against insurgents in Adhamiyah, Iraq.

On December 4, 2006, an insurgent positioned on a rooftop threw a framentation gr***de into McGinnis' Humvee. Without hesitation McGinnis threw his back over the gr***de and absorbed all lethal fragments and the concussive effects of the gr***de with his own body, saving four of his brothers.

Please take a moment and reflect on Ross’ service to our country, family, and friends who miss him dearly.

Today we honor fallen MD soldier SPC Toccara Green.

Toccara Green's desire to be in the military was evident early: for four years in high school she got up early and stayed late to participate in her campus ROTC. Family and friends say her devotion to her country is what inspired her. "The only thing that puts my mind at ease is that she died for what she believed in," said Garry Green Jr., her brother. "She said her ideal situation: go out fighting for our country." Green, 23, of Rosedale, Md., died Aug. 14 when several bombs detonated near her unit in Asad. She was assigned to Fort Drum and is believed to be Maryland's first woman soldier killed in combat in Iraq. Spc. Nicole Coleman met Green during basic training in 2003 and became fast friends. They referred to themselves as "Batman and Robin" or "Pinky and the Brain." Green graduated from high school in 2000 and attended Norfolk State University in Virginia, where she studied telecommunications and broadcasting. She loved roller skating and working on cars. She is survived by her father, Garry Green Sr., and mother, Yvonne.
