What did the well-dress New Oxford man of 1907 wear? I can't say for sure, but it may have been one of these smart outfits from the Sheely Brothers store in New Oxford. They look pretty stylish to me. Does anyone know where the store was located and how long it was in business? (Note the dates on the calendars -- September and October, 1907.)

Here are 3 other photos/post cards from among the group published and sold by pharmacist Edward T. Aucker in the very early 1900's. People in the Center Square did a remarkable job standing still at exactly the right time for the picture! The other 2 pictures of Carlisle St. and Hanover St. show how those streets have changed since then -- but still have a certain familiarity for us today.

Did you ever wonder what New Oxford looked like before the roads were paved? These pictures were taken of Route 30 in the very early 1900's. Local pharmacist Edward T. Aucker published post cards depicting many scenes around town at that time. NOAHS has several of these post cards, with some dated 1910 and 1911. The scenes look surprisingly similar today, over 100 years later! The top picture below is looking West from the square. The bottom photo is looking West, towards the square.

FREE EVENT-NOAHS Second America250 presentation “How Fort Loudoun Shaped Pennsylvania’s Colonial Frontier”. Fort Loudoun Historical Society President Michael Strausner’s presentation will offer a glimpse into the rich and powerful history of the Fort’s past and the work that is being undertaken to resurrect its significance and prominence during the period of the French and Indian War and in advance of the American Revolution.

Fort Loudoun is located along the western edge of today’s Cumberland Valley. It was one of several forts in colonial Pennsylvania built during the French & Indian War. The fort served as a post on the Forbes Road during the Forbes expedition that successfully drove the French away from Fort Duquesne. It remained occupied through Pontiac's War and in 1765 it was the epicenter of the famed Black Boys Rebellion. All of these events became powerful forces that led to the shaping of the frontier attitude that forged this region’s powerful response to events in Boston and the American Revolution.

We don't have much information on this item in the NOAHS collection. It is an empty 1 pint container of ice cream, manufactured by the Myers Ice Cream, Co. of New Oxford, Penna. Do you know anything about it (or the company that made it) that you could share? Where was it located? When was it in operation? etc. It's nice to think that the good people of New Oxford have always liked their ice cream. 😀
