Today’s Supreme Court ruling regarding Act 15 provides clarity on the structure of the Clerk’s Office and allows us to move forward with focus. Throughout this process, my priority has remained ensuring stability for the people of Orleans Parish and maintaining continuity within an office that the courts, attorneys, businesses, and public rely on every single day.

As we move forward, my focus remains on ensuring the Clerk’s Office continues to serve the people of Orleans Parish with professionalism, stability, and accountability. That means supporting the courts, administering elections, preserving public records, assisting attorneys and litigants, and continuing the work of the Clerk of Court’s Office that is efficient, accessible, and responsive to the public.

I am especially thankful for the employees of the Clerk’s Office who remained focused on serving the public throughout this process. These are hardworking people who care about the work they do, this office, and the community they serve.

In the 1990s, I began my journey in the Clerk’s office as a summer employee, steadily advancing through different positions. I was promoted to Chief Deputy in 2006, after Hurricane Katrina. I served in that role until being elected Clerk in 2018. It has been and continues to be an absolute honor and blessing to serve our community.

I want the people of New Orleans to know that we will continue doing the work, serving this community, and putting you first.

I want to thank the many poll commissioners, election workers, Clerk’s Office staff, and voters who participated in today’s election process.

Throughout the day, our focus remained on ensuring voters had access to the ballot and that this election was conducted smoothly, professionally, and with integrity.

I also want to thank voters for their patience today, particularly those navigating the closed party primary process and ballot selection requirements.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, participated, and helped make today’s election possible.

It was good being with staff, election workers, and members of the public as we continue working to serve the people of Orleans Parish.

“The people of Orleans Parish are counting on this office, and we will not fail them.”

Today, Clerk of Court Chelsey Richard Napoleon provided an update to the public regarding the transition of the Clerk’s Office for Orleans Parish following the signing of Senate Bill 256.

During today’s press conference, Clerk Napoleon acknowledged the concerns many voters and residents have expressed throughout this process and reiterated that while she did not support how this transition occurred, her responsibility now is to move the office forward and continue serving the people of Orleans Parish.

Her message was clear:

-The office is functional, the hardworking staff who serve the public every day remain in place, and there will be no interruption in services
-The May 16 election remains the office’s top immediate priority
-The office is actively assessing operations and needs during this transition
-The focus moving forward is stability, continuity, transparency, and public service

“We will not fail in providing continuity of service. We will not fail in giving the public the stability they expect from this office. And we will not fail with this May 16th election.”

Yesterday, our returning commissioners completed their final class ahead of Election Day.

These individuals have been serving for years and meet annually to refresh their knowledge on what it takes to successfully manage the polls on Election Day. They are fully equipped, supported and ready for Oct. 11.

As we get closer to elections, we often get questions from community members about how they can get involved in the elections process.

The process is simple. You must be a registered voter in the parish where you serve, and high school seniors age 17 and older can also participate. Active military members and out-of-state college students may also be eligible.

Hear from Betsy Stoner, Executive Director of the Orleans Parish Board of Election Supervisors, on how easy it is to get started and how neighbors and families often help one another join the effort.
