Dyngus Day NOLA Dyngus Day is the holiday for people who are disappointed to think that the spirit animating Mardi Gras lives only once a year.

We are trying to disburse the best of Buffalo traditions, Dyngus Days have been the best Mondays of our lives. While Mardi Gras is the anxious overindulgence in anticipation of the start of the austerity of Lent, Dyngus Day is the symmetrical analogue - that tension in the string of Lenten restraint released to the vibrations and sound of vice and rebirth. Though its medieval origins were pregnan

t with many and varied traditions centering on courtship and ritual purification, the two most popular themes that thrive today are water and the pussy-willow. The former is manifested most in the form of a sq**rt gun, where the interested shoots the object of his crush. The pussy-willow is traditionally the first plant to regrow at the start of spring, and is thus a symbol of fertility and rebirth. On Dyngus Day it's used to return affection from the girls to the boys by gently(ish) slapping the legs and higher, as the enthusiasm increases. Though starting before lunch, or even breakfast, in Buffalo and Poland, we will start as soon as people get off work with sit down meals and pastries as a stout foundation for many favored vodkas. Then the music starts, and the tenor increases.
