The RDO is sad to announce the passing of our longest-serving Member and President Emeritus, Gasper Schiro. A natural campaigner, Gasper was known for being gregarious and affable and he gave over 30 years of service to New Orleans as the elected Register of Conveyances, a record-keeping office dating back to French colonial Louisiana that Schiro held from 1978 until 2008, when the office was consolidated under the Clerk of Civil District Court.
Although he drew opponents over the years, Gasper kept winning. and he retired without ever losing an election.
Gasper was fond of telling the story that his political career began when he married Mel (Romelia) Boyer, also a native Orleanian, in 1969. “Assessor Jim Comiskey was at the wedding, and he said ‘Anybody who can fill up St. Anthony’s church on a Wednesday ought to run for office!!” Their reception was at Gallier Hall.
Gasper Schiro is survived by his widow, “Mel,” the former Romelia Boyer, nephews, Michael Schiro and Matthew Schiro, both of New Orleans, as well as great-nephews and nieces, numerous cousins, and a host of longtime friends.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Church on Thursday, July 28, 2022.
