September 15 marks the independence anniversaries of several Central American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. It’s a meaningful date to begin recognizing the rich histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities.

Today, the City of New Orleans says farewell to a true giant, Jerome “Big Duck” Smith.

A Freedom Rider, civil rights leader, community organizer and mentor, Big Duck spent his life fighting for justice and fighting for the children of New Orleans.

While we mourn his passing, we celebrate the legacy he leaves behind, one that will continue to live on through the people he inspired, the community he served, and the generations that follow.

Rest well, Big Duck!

Mayor Moreno had a great time visiting the 2nd grade class at Fannie C. Williams Elementary for the S.T.A.R. (Stop, Talking, And Read) Initiative!

From reading and talking with the students to sharing plenty of laughs, today was a reminder of just how important it is to build positive relationships with our young people.

Today, the newly-seated Sewerage and Water Board elected its first citizen President in decades, naming Jonathan Stewart as Board President for a four year term.
