Crossroads Louisiana, Inc.

Crossroads Louisiana, Inc. A non-profit agency providing community-based services to adults with intellectual developmental disabilities.

Crossroads Louisiana, a 501 (c)3 non-profit agency, was founded by Dr. Gerald Murphy in 1982 to serve persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in the Greater New Orleans area. As more and more State institutions began to shut their doors, Dr. Murphy saw an urgent need to provide community-based services that maximize each individual’s potential for independent community living and self-sufficiency.

*Supported Independent Living (SIL)*
Crossroads’ residential services also include a SIL program in which individuals with a NOW (New Opportunities Waiver) live throughout the community either alone or with roommates, in apartments or private homes. We try to inspire as many personal choices as possible and encourage each resident to become an active member of the community. Each individual has specially trained staff, Direct Service Providers (DSPs), to support daily living activities; including, but not limited to nutrition, cooking, money management, hygiene, the use of public transportation and other self-help skills.

*Title XIX Community Homes*
Crossroads operates community homes in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes that provide family-style living for six individuals in each home. The over-arching goal of the program is to create a caring, family atmosphere in which our residents can learn essential living skills such as safety rules, self-care, meal planning, grocery shopping, money management, and meal preparation.

*Job Link at Crossroads*
Job Link at Crossroads is a progressive day program for adults with developmental disabilities that helps individuals develop specific skills for achieving employment and/or community-integrated living goals through: Supported Employment, and Day Habilitation/Community Life Engagement.

We always have a wonderful time with Ms. Jean! This week we painted beautiful sunflowers and created necklaces and keychains. Every project is filled with creativity, patience, and plenty of smiles.

Art is more than just making something beautiful—it’s an opportunity to build confidence, practice fine motor skills, express creativity, and enjoy time together. We’re so thankful for Ms. Jean and the joy she brings to our individuals each week!

Working with adults with disabilities is so much more than a job. It's having the privilege of witnessing life-changing moments every single day.

The biggest accomplishments aren't always the ones the world celebrates. They're watching someone learn to tie their shoes independently, confidently order their own meal at a restaurant, or master new tasks in supported employment.

Every new skill builds confidence, independence, and a sense of pride that's impossible to put into words. The smile on their faces when they realize, "I did that," is something we'll never take for granted. Those moments remind us that success isn't measured by how big the milestone is, but by how much courage and determination it took to get there.

Every achievement, no matter how small it may seem to others, represents perseverance, growth, and another step toward independence. Being trusted to walk alongside these incredible individuals as they discover their abilities, reach their goals, and build confidence is one of the greatest privileges imaginable.

This work changes lives—and it changes ours, too.

Building confidence one ride at a time!

Our individuals are learning how to safely navigate public transportation, giving them the skills and confidence to become more independent in their everyday lives. Every new route learned is another step toward greater freedom, self-advocacy, and community inclusion.
