"Supporters say reforestation is needed now more than ever, especially in the face of rising deaths due to extreme heat in Louisiana and an ever-present need for improved drainage as floods become more common. Green infrastructure is also seen as helping to lower energy bills, improve air quality and increase property values, according to the EPA.

Friends of Jefferson the Beautiful hopes to increase the tree canopy to 40% over the next 15 years, starting with the planting of about 1,440 trees across areas most bereft of greenery by 2031."

"Around 1.42 billion people live in 1,546 low-lying coastal cities globally that are experiencing underground infrastructure impacts from sea level rise, according to a 2024 research study from the University of Hawaii. "As the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season begins, Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple said homeowners are still struggling to find affordable coverage, especially in coastal areas.

'Is there still a property insurance crisis in Louisiana?' Sabrina Wilson asked.

'Yes, we’re still in what I would call a property crisis,' Temple said. 'I still hear it from people every day that it’s still unaffordable. But we are making progress.'"

Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple says the state remains in a property insurance crisis, but new companies and rate decreases show signs of progress.

"For years, resident leaders at Guste Homes raised concerns about infrastructure failures, delayed repairs, funding restrictions, and operational barriers. Now, as HANO moves to take over management, a new lawsuit argues that many of the very problems being cited to justify the takeover were caused by HANO's own actions and inaction. Accountability matters, and so does ensuring residents have a voice in decisions that impact their community."

The manager argues that the complex’s problems are HANO’s fault. HANO leadership says change is needed.
