Holiday Safety Message

The upcoming holiday periods provide an opportunity to spend well-deserved time off with family and friends. Whether you are moving about or enjoying your time at home, it is important to set aside some time to ensure the safety of you and your loved ones. With many different opportunities to travel, engaging in cooking, recreational sports, or simply decorating your house, it is important to understand the risks.

All leaders should be engaged in pre-holiday safety briefings for those taking part in holiday activities and travel, especially for those traveling long distances. Leaders will review their Marines and Sailors plans for the holiday and take the time to stress the importance of off duty activity planning, eliminating alcohol-related incidents, and motor vehicle safety.

It is also important to note service members taking action to help or save others at risk. We have seen a number of Marines injured or killed when attending to others in harm's way, such as assisting others during a vehicle break down on the side of the road. It is important to remind you to remain vigilant and take every precaution possible to keep self and others safe, even in difficult or unforeseen circumstances. For all personnel, remember to keep your mind engaged in deliberate risk management with a focus on good decision making and sound judgement.

Take every opportunity to care for and develop your mind, spirit, and body as part of the whole Marine concept during the holiday season. Make the right choices both on-duty and off-duty for our nation, for each other and for the Corps. Be safe and enjoy the holidays.

in 1950, the Organized Marine Corps Reserve was mobilized for duty in Korea. During the Korean War more than 130,000 reservists served on active duty. There were 13 Medal of Honor recipients among the Marine Corps Reserves and every third aviation combat mission was flown by either a Navy or Marine reservist. The Marine reservists were in Korea from 20th of July to the 11th of September 1950.
