Iceland's men's handball team won the Silver medal in the 2008 Winter Olympics. All Icelanders are listed in one telephone book and they're all listed by first name! Contrary to its name, Iceland's coastal summer temperatures are quite warm (low 70's f); coastal winters resemble Chicago's. Iceland boasts the world's northernmost golf course, located in Akureyri on the Arctic Circle. Christopher Columbus visited Iceland on at least one occasion in the 1480's.

Regardless of one's position on this referendum, it is a great credit to the people of Iceland that 82% of all elegible voters chose to cast their ballots. Thank you for teaching the rest of the world a true lesson in representative democracy.

Broadcaster RUV reports that 52.8% of voters rejected the government's proposal to resume accession talks.

Calling all Icelanders along the US Gulf Coast! Absentee voting on whether to continue negotiations for possible European Union membership begins on 27 July and the Consulate in New Orleans will be open and available for those who wish to vote on this very important matter. (The actual election day is 29 August but it is recommended that you vote sooner rather than later).

What a great honor representing Iceland and the Consular Corps and speaking at the annual Philippine Independence Day festivities this past weekend along with my friend Lt. Governor Nungesser. It was so nice being with my colleagues from Germany, Spain and Uruguay to honor the Filippino people and support Filippino Consul Romero at this wounderful (but warm!) occasion!
