Prime Time Family Reading

Prime Time Family Reading Prime Time Inc. offers a set of unique, humanities-focused, and outcomes-based programs designed to engage children and families.

All Prime Time initiatives are based on a common methodology featuring five elements of learning and teaching:

Participant centered instruction and learning - Facilitate reading and discussion based on participant interests and responses. Socratic Method and Open-ended Questioning-Facilitate learning by asking, rather than telling. Ask follow-up questions to deepen the consideration and understa

nding of a subject or issue. Development of Higher-order Thinking Skills-Adhere to text and guide participants to compare and contrast, analyze, describe, predict, etc. Making Personal Connections-Guide participants to connect literature and discussion to other/personal stories, current events, film, music, poetry, artwork, or television, etc. Collective Learning Strategies Promoting Respectful, Diverse Audiences-Permit participants to engage with and learn from one another as well as from the instructor/facilitator via group discussion.

Before school let out for the summer, we shipped 1,000 Prime Time Boxes to schools, libraries, and community organizations across Louisiana to help them provide books and learning resources to families to help combat summer learning loss. Nearly 500 also went to families in Georgia, courtesy of the Georgia Public Library Service. That's nearly 9,000 books that are now part of families' home libraries!

Bee-bim bop. Just saying it is half the fun. In bouncy, almost musical rhyme, this book follows a young girl helping her mother make bee-bim bop — a traditional Korean dish whose name means "mixed up rice." We all know that feeling: hungry, excited, anticipating a favorite meal. That familiar feeling builds with every page — the grocery run, the chopping and stirring, the setting of the table, the waiting — and by the last page you will be hungry. You have been warned.

"Bee-Bim Bop!" sparks conversations about food, family, and tradition. What foods make your family feel at home? What's your favorite thing to help make in the kitchen? It even comes with Linda Sue Park's own family recipe tucked inside — and don't be surprised if little hands want to start cooking before you've even finished reading.

"Bee-Bim Bop!" is part of the Prime Time Nourish series. View books from this series, and our other series, at primetimefamily.org/prime-time-reading-providers/ -series

We are proud of Prime Time's success, not only here at home but as we've grown across the U.S., and look forward to continuing to be a partner in increasing literacy rates among families.

Prime Time, a Louisiana family literacy program, has boosted reading skills for decades by fostering shared mealtimes and discussions, impacting children statewide and now nationwide.

"We are at a critical juncture. While 80% of 4-year-olds in Louisiana are enrolled in publicly funded early learning programs and our K-12 ranking have improved from 49th to 37th in the nation, sustaining that progress requires stronger connections between the classroom and the home."

"The greatest value of Prime Time is its ability to ensure learning continues beyond the school day." - Helen Clare Taylor, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at LSU Shreveport

When you support the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, you support the schools, libraries, and community organizations across Louisiana working to improve literacy among families, just like those at Helix Aviation Academy in Baton Rouge and in your own communities.

And your support is making an impact. From the release of the recent study showing our Prime Time program significantly increases participants’ school readiness to its recognition by the Library of Congress for its national impact on literacy, this Louisiana-grown program is contributing to the literacy growth in our state and beyond.

Your support brings these experiences to more classrooms, families, and communities across our state. Thank you for being part of this work and for helping us raise the next generation of Louisianans committed to preserving, protecting, and promoting our history and culture.
