UNITY of Greater New Orleans is a nonprofit serving as lead agency for a collaborative of about 50 organizations working to end homelessness by providing housing & services. Founded in 1992, UNITY is an award-winning nonprofit leading a collaborative of 60 organizations providing housing and services to the homeless. Last year UNITY was selected from 9000 organizations nationwide to receive the No

nprofit Award from the National Alliance to End Homelessness in recognition of outstanding achievements to reduce the post-Hurricane Katrina explosion of homelessness. Every day we continue to fight to rebuild our beloved New Orleans equitably, with a home for everyone. UNITY does outreach on the streets and in New Orleans' abandoned buildings to search for the most vulnerable and find them permanent housing, develops affordable and supportive housing, assists the public to find affordable housing, and advocates for public policies to end homelessness.

The Louisiana Senate just voted to make homelessness a state crime. It’s a sad day.
Thank you to everyone who spoke out, and to everyone who supports the work of trying to house those in need.

Your calls and emails are having an impact - keep them coming! Louisiana’s bill to make homelessness a state crime sailed through the House but has not yet picked up enough votes in the Senate!
Contact your Senator this morning -and every day this week - and Senate President Cameron Henry - and let them know what you think!

House Bill 211 by Representative Debbie Villio awaits a hearing on the Senate Floor, and now is the time to let your Senator know that homelessness is not a crime. Instead of investing in proven solutions to homelessness, like deeply affordable housing, Villio's legislation will criminalize homelessness and punish poverty. Instead of providing a safe, stable and healthy place to call home when people have no choice to sleep outside, this legislation will push them into jail, forced treatment and unpaid labor.

Before the Senate votes on what is being called the one of the worst and cruelest homelessness bills in the country, tell your Senator to vote NO on Representative Debbie Villio's House Bill 211.
