"Stop in the name of the Coast Guard!"

Did you know Popeye was a Coastie?

Creator Elzie Crisley Segar initially created Popeye as a civilian sailor to reflect his real-life counterpart, Frank "Rocky" Fiegel, a local bar bouncer in Segar's hometown of Chester, Illinois, and a former sailor of the Merchant Marines. In 1937, he made the switch to the Coast Guard in the two-feature reel Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba's Forty Thieves. Throughout this short, you can see Popeye at his very own Coast Guard Station as well as hear him say the line "stop in the name of the Coast Guard". In 1941, Popeye joined the U.S. Navy, where he has remained since.
