Flood Protection Authority

Flood Protection Authority It is one of the largest flood protection systems in the world. We then reopen all of the floodgates.

The Flood Protection Authority operates and maintains the system that protects the Greater New Orleans region on the east bank of the Mississippi River from floods, storms and hurricanes. How Your Flood Defense System Works:

BEFORE:
Preparation for the next hurricane season always begins the day after the previous season ends. Throughout the year, the Flood Protection Authority inspects, maintai

ns and regularly exercises all components of the flood risk reduction system. Our emergency procedures are consistently updated and we practice “drill runs” by using those procedures to ensure that our employees are prepared to respond to any potential flood threat. DURING:
As a storm approaches, we begin the systematic closing of valves, flood gates, lift gates, and sector gates. During a storm, all of our essential employees stay in safe houses while monitoring each flood protection component to make sure they are operating properly. AFTER:
After the storm has passed and the emergency is over, we systematically inspect all of the flood protection components to determine if any damages occurred and immediately repair them to make sure they are ready for the next threat.

Planning work or an event near the levee system?

Projects and activities near critical flood protection infrastructure may require a levee safety permit. This process helps ensure proposed work is reviewed carefully and completed safely.

This graphic shows a simplified overview of how applications move through review, coordination, approvals, inspections, and final completion.

Because protecting the region’s flood defense system requires coordination across multiple agencies, some permits may involve additional review depending on the scope of the project.

Two critical pieces of our region's flood protection system: the Bayou Bienvenue and Bayou Dupre Sector Gates.

These navigable sector gates are part of the Hurricane Storm and Damage Risk Reduction System, enhanced by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers following Hurricane Katrina. Each gate spans 56 feet wide and stands 32 feet above sea level, designed to stop storm surge from reaching the highly populated communities of St. Bernard Parish and the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans.

When not in use for flood protection, these gates allow marine vessels to pass through the levees and floodwalls running parallel to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, keeping both commerce and community protected.
