On Saturday, the Company hosted about 30 area Firefighters for a technical training on lifting and stabilization. This “Day of Destruction” was the conclusion of 2 nights of classroom instruction on the techniques and hazards of technical rescues.

We’d like to thank our outstanding supporters that helped put all the pieces of this drill together: NM DPW for coordinating props and equipment, Frank Lasky and FSM Services for the use of Heavy Equipment, Modzelewski’s Towing for donating and transporting the junk, and Goat Boy Soaps for donating lunch for our 1st responders.

At 8:13 Thursday morning, the company was alerted for a smoke investigation with sprinkler activation at a commercial property in the southern section of New Milford.

Initial response was delayed as units were just clearing a motor vehicle accident with injuries on Wells Road in the downtown area. A firefighter already on the south side of town arrived within minutes of dispatch and reported a heavy smoke condition inside a warehouse space. Based on the confirmed smoke condition and activated sprinkler system, New Milford Car 6 upgraded the incident to a working fire and dispatch transmitted the all-call assignment, bringing a full response from the Northville and Gaylordsville Fire Departments.

Members stretched a handline from Engine 21 through an overhead door and made a quick knockdown on several burning pallets inside the warehouse. Ladder 25 was utilized to check the roof for extension and prepare for possible ventilation operations, while Brookfield Tower Ladder was special called to assist with operations at the large industrial building.

Firefighters and mutual aid crews operated on scene for just over an hour removing densely stacked palletized materials while completing overhaul operations and checking for extension throughout the structure.

At the time of dispatch, New Milford Ambulance was committed to multiple EMS calls, prompting Brookfield EMS to provide a standby ambulance for fireground operations. New Milford Ambulance later cleared from a Danbury transport and returned to handle the remainder of the incident.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was requested to the scene to inspect the contents of the warehouse and assist with follow-up operations.

Strong work by all agencies involved prevented the fire from extending further into the building and kept damage to a minimum.

Thank You to the town of New Milford for showing their support for the annual Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters campaign by turning the town hall red.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation launched Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters in 2017 to commemorate the Foundation’s 25th anniversary. Held annually during the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, this tribute has grown to include fire departments, families, and communities across the country lighting their homes and buildings in red to honor fallen firefighters.
We invite you to join us by lighting your home, fire department, or community building in red this weekend (5/1-5/3) as a symbol of support and remembrance.

When the call comes in, training and teamwork make all the difference.

On Sunday morning, our crews put those skills to work alongside our partners from Northville. Together, we set up a rope rescue system using the Vortex, which is a portable tripod system that creates strong, elevated anchor points while keeping operations safe and efficient. Members then rappelled down a steep embankment as part of the drill.

Beyond the technical side, this was an incredible opportunity to show our newest members the ropes and help ensure the next generation of responders are ready when it matters most.

Earlier this morning, our members along with our friends from Gaylordsville, headed out to Bulls Bridge for swift water rescue training!

Our technicians worked in the water as victims and demonstrated different types of rescue techniques utilized at the swift water technician level, while shore crews worked on proper rope systems and shore based rescue operations.

⚠️ Swift water conditions are extremely dangerous, even shallow water can be critical. Please never attempt to swim or enter fast moving water.

As we move into the warmer months, here’s a look at some of the work put in over the winter.

From ice water rescue training to hose advancement, along with traffic control and scene safety, and other hands-on nights like vehicle extrication and pump operations, we stayed busy. Always prepared for what’s next.

On Monday evening, during our company meeting, we proudly welcomed three new members to our ranks — Justin, Gabe, and Chris. Each has demonstrated strong dedication throughout out candidate process and have plans to begin Firefighter 1 training this August.

Since January 2025, we’ve had the privilege of bringing on 10 new probationary members from a wide range of ages and backgrounds. This growth isn’t by chance — it’s the result of a department-wide culture shift focused on early hands-on training, strong officer mentorship, and the natural camaraderie that develops when candidates go through the process together.

At a time when volunteer departments across the country are facing recruitment challenges, we’re proud to stand apart.

Volunteerism is alive and well in New Milford. We have 3 additional candidates in the process, if you are interested in learning more about our company and how you can help our community; please join us any Wednesday night at 7.

Friend, cheerleader, counselor, mentor, brother. Tonight, we had the honor of standing for the man, the myth, the legend, Bernie Meehan; as he was inducted into the Connecticut State Firefighters Association’s Hall or Fame.
From a volunteer at Newtown Hook and Ladder at age 16, to anytime, any department, as long as it takes, in retirement… Bernie is a welcomed site on any fire scene or in the aftermath, supporting our first responders. Here’s to a life of service and lifetime more, congratulations Chief!
