FINALLY! More than three years after they began, plans to demolish the former New Market School’s gymnasium and use the space for a sports and activity facility are finally underway.

Having had a week to think about moving forward on an almost $750,000 plan or requesting a new design for a lesser facility, Council collectively endorsed the proposed expenditure in Monday evening’s regular session. George W. Reagan Construction’s low bid of $607,926 was approved.

“The vast majority of everybody in the city wants something that they can have that they can go to, that’s a nice community place where they can bring families,” said Alder Lori Stiner Tucker.

The City of New Market, in partnership with Carson Newman University, is applying for Local Park and Recreation Funds (LPRF) grant for a new, state of the art regional archery facility to be located next to City Hall, and a new playground at Roadside Park. The grant requires a local match of 50%, which Carson Newman would supply in the form of a separate grant from the Easton Foundation, if funded. The scope of the grant application was selected by referencing the needs within the City’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan and after conversations with Carson Newman’s Athletic Department. Please see the slides below for more information. These slides are required to display information in accordance with program guidelines.

Please note – this project is contingent on both grants being awarded.

We want to hear from you. What are your thoughts on the proposed project?
