Please stay off roadways if possible. Road crews are actively working on main roads, and secondary roads are currently nearly impassable.

We are experiencing multiple vehicles becoming stalled in the middle of roadways, creating dangerous conditions and preventing crews from doing their jobs safely.

If you can stay home, please do so.
If travel is absolutely necessary, it is strongly recommended that you use a four-wheel drive (4WD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle.

Your cooperation helps keep everyone safe and allows emergency and road crews to continue their work efficiently. Thank you for your understanding.

Thank you,
Shane Grissom
New Madrid Fire Chief

In anticipation of extremely cold temperatures in the coming days, the New Madrid Fire Department advises residents to exercise heightened caution to ensure safety and prevent fires.

Freezing weather conditions may cause pipes to freeze, and if thawing is necessary, residents are urged to use approved and safe methods with extreme caution. Portable heaters should not be placed under crawl spaces due to the high risk of fire.

The use of space heaters is strongly discouraged; however, if utilized, they must be plugged directly into wall outlets, equipped with tip-over safety shutoff switches, and never left unattended.

When using gas heat, ensure the presence of a functioning carbon monoxide detector. In cases of power outages, generators should be placed outdoors in well-ventilated areas and properly connected to prevent backfeeding, which poses a significant risk to utility workers.

Warming shelters will be available if necessary. Residents are cautioned against using ovens, stoves, or other household items not designed for heating homes. The safety of residents is the top priority.

For concerns or questions, please contact the department.

Stay safe,
Fire Chief Shane Grissom,
New Madrid Fire Department.

As cold weather approaches, the New Madrid Fire Department would like to raise awareness about the dangers of space heaters. Each year, space heaters account for one-third of all house fires in the United States, leading to approximately 25,000 fires and over 300 deaths. They pose a heightened risk compared to conventional heating methods and are often misused.

Space heaters are frequently left unattended or plugged into extension cords that are not heavy-duty enough to support their electrical load. It's crucial to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for safe usage. Always plug space heaters directly into an outlet, avoiding power strips and extension cords, and never leave them unattended.

This year, we have already reported one space heater fire in the tri-county area. The New Madrid Fire Department responds to at least one space heater fire annually. We strongly urge residents to adhere to manufacturer guidelines when using space heaters and to refrain from using them as your sole source of heat

We want to ensure the safety of your family and property. In addition to space heater safety, we recommend having properly working smoke detectors, as well as functioning carbon monoxide detectors if you have gas heating or appliances. Due to synthetic building materials, the average escape time after a smoke detector sounds is only two to three minutes.

The New Madrid Fire Department wishes you a safe and enjoyable cold and holiday season. If you need our services, please call 573-748-5901 or dial 911 in case of an emergency. Remember, SMOKE DETECTORS SAVE LIVES!
