🚗 Important Parking Reminder 🚗

We want to remind residents that when parallel parking, all vehicles must be parked in the same direction as traffic flow on that side of the street. This requirement applies to all vehicles parked within the public right-of-way, not just along designated parking areas.

Parking the wrong direction is more than just a violation—it creates real safety concerns:

⚠️ Hazard: Vehicles parked against traffic must pull out into oncoming lanes, increasing the risk of accidents.
👀 Reduced Visibility: Drivers parked the wrong way often have limited visibility when re-entering traffic, especially when pulling out from behind other vehicles.

To help keep our streets safe, $15 parking tickets will be issued to vehicles found in violation.

2026 SPRING CLEAN UP
MONDAY, MAY 4TH

DISPOSAL ITEMS MUST BE BAGGED/BOXED AND PLACED WITHIN 3 FEET OF THE ROADWAY/CURB ON YOUR REGULAR PICKUP DAY BY 6:00 AM

ITEMS ACCEPTED – Unwanted miscellaneous household bulk items that are simply otherwise too large for a cart. Volume is limited per household and cannot exceed a pickup bed truck volume.

ITEMS NOT ACCEPTED – Construction debris, dirt, stumps, railroad ties, wet paint, hazardous waste, automobile/mechanical parts, no appliances, no tires, nothing from businesses, etc.

Loose piles of trash thrown out at the curbside will NOT be picked up. The garbage collector will not rake or scoop up loose waste. Items MUST BE BAGGED OR BOXED.

APPLIANCES – Such as refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, stoves, water heaters, microwaves, air conditioners, furnaces, etc. for curb pickup must have a receipt from City Office, fee $15.00.

TVs – Televisions and computer monitors will NOT be picked up curbside and must be taken to the Des Moines County HazChem Center for disposal. There may be a fee required for disposal, please contact the HazChem in advance for costs/drop off times, 319-753-8758.

Des Moines County Area Recyclers provides curbside collection services every other week to the City’s residents and weekly collection at the City Park every Wednesday from 10AM-12PM.

GARBAGE POSTPONED & RECLYCLING CANCELED

Waste Management has postponed garbage collection for New London, Iowa today (3/16/2026). Garbage will be collected on Tuesday (3/17/2026).

Recycling has also been canceled for today (3/16/2026). They will collect items on the next regularly scheduled pickup day (3/30/2026).

WATER MAIN BREAK REPAIR - S. Maple St.

The water service in this area will be shut off within the next 20 minutes with hopes of having the water back on within 4 hours of the start of the repairs.
