"The initial concern driving the passage of Pueblo’s ban was syringe litter, but our study suggests that restrictions on harm reduction services may have significant unintended consequences that hinder community public health efforts.

Decreased visits to the needle exchange mean fewer opportunities for people who use opioids to access substance use disorder treatment, HIV and hepatitis C testing, and make connections to housing and other social services."

"We always say that connection is the opposite of addiction,” says Tayal. “Our peer team really exemplifies that.”

At the center of the work is a peer support team that helps community members build relationships and connect with services. Peer workers provide outreach, distribute safer-use supplies and offer a trusted presence when someone needs it most. Just as importantly, they help reduce isolation and foster a sense of belonging."
