Each pinwheel in this installation represents a Conn student who believes that voting is important. Students wrote on the pinwheels why they believe voting is important, decorated them with paint, and placed them on the field in front of the library. The installation serves as a reminder that you can still register to vote in NL, CT on election day tomorrow and that there will be transportation for voting AND for registering. Details in your e-mails!

SGA is proud to recognize that our Smith House Senator, Maryum Qasim's story is featured on the Humans of PUAN page.

“Are you out of your mind? Who sends their daughters to the U.S?’ These questions were often thrown upon my Amma and Baba as they supported my decision to travel to the U.S via K-L Youth Exchange & Study Program at the age of sixteen. Coming from a very traditional family in Pakistan, family pressure always had a strong influence in our lives. Looking back now, I can only imagine what a hard choice had it been for my parents. As I left Pakistan for the first time, I didn’t quite understand the tears in the eyes of my parents while mine sparkled with excitement of exploring the other side of the world. I was placed in Arkansas with a family that loved me and cared for me like their own. I met new people, traveled new places, explored myself and my superpowers. It was a gradual yet beautiful realization that experiencing all this growth would not have been possible if my parents had simply rejected the idea of letting me go. I am eternally grateful to my Amma and Baba for never making a decision for me rather letting me decide for myself. Their strong belief in me has made me contagiously confident and fearless.
Today, I am where I had desired to be at this age working towards where I aspire to be in the future and I owe it all to my beautiful parents. Upon departing Pakistan for college recently, I could not hold back my tears as I bid farewell to my parents; unlike the first time, it was much harder this time. Maybe because now more than ever I had realized that laughing at my Amma’s jokes, patting my baba’s back, kissing them randomly and seeing their beautiful faces every day will be blessings that I had to sacrifice on.

Maryum Qasim is a rising sophomore at Connecticut College, USA. She plans on majoring in International Relations with journalism and Pre-law as minors. Maryum has been declared as Arkansas’s Goodwill Ambassador to the World in 2013 and was also awarded the outstanding volunteer service award by the U.S Department of States the same year. Maryum was awarded with the Emerging Leaders Award in 2015 as a recognition of her efforts with empowering the women of her community through vocational training. She has also been enlisted in Women High Achievers of PUAN.

Every Thursday at 5:30 SAC will be releasing one person from the Floralia lineup. Make sure to check in on SAC social media!

We are excited to announce that Mike Taylor will be performing at Floralia this year! This is the first of many Floralia releases. When it comes to Mike Taylor’s music, it’s all about creating a feel-good moment. He became a nightlife staple, securing a remix from DJ Vice for his song “World Is Our Playground” and landing an appearance at Mad Decent Block Party. He started hitting his stride with a guest turn on Afrojack’s “SummerThing!” which reached the top 10 on the Billboard dance charts in 2015.

“My goal is to make music that transcends age, gender, color, religion, sexuality,” he says. “I hope that people get the more deep and meaningful songs as well as the fun good time vibes. I hope I can spark dialogue about art and culture, as well as bring awareness to social issues. If I can inspire one person the way music has inspired me, then that's really all I need.” His new EP, “Feel Good”, features hits such as “Body High”, “Electric Church”, and “Colours”. Check out Mike Taylor on YouTube, Apple Music, and Spotify to hear more music!
