NEW JURY SCAM CIRCULATING THE AREA

We have received multiple calls regarding missed jury duty. Both callers stated they were contacted by an unknown male who claimed to be with the New Kent Sheriff’s Office and possibly the “Civil Court League.”

According to the callers, the unknown male advised them that they had missed jury duty and claimed that their signatures were on a summons. One caller stated she was instructed to come to our office to complete a handwriting exam. Both callers stated they were not asked to provide payment or personal information.

This appears to be consistent with a common jury duty scam. In these scams, callers may claim to be from a law enforcement agency, court, or government office and tell victims they missed jury duty, failed to appear in court, or have an active warrant. The caller may use pressure, threats of arrest, or official-sounding language to make the situation seem urgent. In some cases, scammers may eventually ask for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, banking information, or personal identifying information.

The New Kent County Sheriff’s Office will not call and demand payment over the phone, request gift cards or cryptocurrency, or threaten immediate arrest for missed jury duty. Anyone who receives a suspicious call should not provide personal information, should not make any payments, and should not follow instructions from the caller without first verifying the information.

If you receive a call like this, hang up and contact the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office directly at 804-966-9500 or contact the appropriate court using a verified phone number. Do not rely on a phone number provided by the caller.

Deputy Schuyler Sibley Receives VFW National Award for Public Servants

The New Kent County Sheriff's Office is proud to congratulate Deputy Schuyler Sibley on being recognized with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) National Award for Public Servants during the Providence Forge Recreation Association's Memorial Day Picnic held on Monday, May 25, 2026, at the Providence Forge Recreation Center.
Deputy Sibley was nominated for this prestigious award by VFW Post 8356 in recognition of his extraordinary courage and commitment to public service. The award was presented on behalf of the post by CW5 Ken Gilman.
Deputy Sibley earned this recognition following a remarkable off-duty incident in the City of Williamsburg. While spending time with his family, Deputy Sibley witnessed an armed individual posing a threat to others. Without hesitation, he took action to protect those around him. After a brief foot pursuit, Deputy Sibley successfully detained the suspect until officers with the Williamsburg Police Department arrived and took the individual into custody.
Deputy Sibley's actions exemplify the highest ideals of law enforcement, demonstrating courage, selflessness, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others, even while off duty. His quick thinking and decisive response helped prevent further danger to innocent citizens and reflected the professionalism and dedication that the New Kent County Sheriff's Office strives to uphold every day.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Deputy Sibley for his act of valor and public service. We also thank VFW Post 8356 for recognizing his bravery and for their continued support of the men and women who serve our communities.
Congratulations, Deputy Sibley, on this well-deserved honor. Your actions have made both your community and your Sheriff's Office proud.
