We would like to remind motorists that Paul Miller’s Law became effective on June 5, 2025, making it illegal in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to use a hand-held cell phone while operating a motor vehicle. During the first year of the law, officers issued warnings only.

Beginning June 6, 2026, violations are subject to citation. After applicable court costs, fines can exceed a total cost of $200.

Hands-Free. It's the law.

Operation Northern Sweep Targets Narcotics Activity Across Multiple Counties

On April 21, 2026, the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General, in conjunction with the New Kensington Police Department, the Westmoreland County Drug Task Force, and the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office, conducted a coordinated enforcement initiative known as “Operation Northern Sweep.” The operation was additionally supported by federal partners from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives (ATF).

This operation included the ex*****on of twenty-two arrest and bench warrants related to narcotics possession, sales, and distribution across multiple municipalities in northern Westmoreland and Allegheny Counties. In addition, saturation patrols were conducted in targeted jurisdictions to address ongoing narcotics trafficking and distribution.

As a result of the operation, numerous individuals were taken into custody and remanded to the Westmoreland, Allegheny, and Indiana County prisons on outstanding warrants.

Law enforcement officials also seized quantities of methamphetamine, co***ne, and drug paraphernalia during the course of the operation.

Operations like Northern Sweep demonstrate the effectiveness of coordinated, multi-agency enforcement efforts in combating illegal narcotics activity. By working together at the local, county, state, and federal levels, we are better equipped to protect our communities and enhance public safety.

Cooperative initiatives such as this remain a critical component in addressing the distribution of illegal drugs and improving the quality of life for residents throughout the City of New Kensington.

The caller tells the individual that they have a pending criminal matter, and encourages them to submit payment to them via online banking applications, such as CashApp.
