Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the first responders, service members, and ordinary citizens who showed extraordinary courage in the moments and days that followed.

For many of our students, September 11 is history rather than a memory. That makes it even more important that we continue to share its stories—the heartbreak, the heroism, and the way people came together to help complete strangers when they needed one another most.

May we remember those we lost, honor those who served, and continue teaching the next generation the value of courage, compassion, and unity.

We will never forget.

This room represents countless years of educational experience and expertise. We are grateful to our retired teachers who have laid a solid foundation on which we continue to educate children each and every day. 💙💚 Secretary Spotlight: Jasmine Phillips | Daspit Elementary

Walking into the office at Daspit Elementary gave a pretty accurate demonstration of Jasmine Phillips’ job before the interview even began.

There were students who needed her attention, families coming through, paperwork to handle, and several things happening at once.

Jasmine didn't miss a beat.

Wonder Woman may have some competition.

Ask Jasmine what a school secretary actually does and the list starts growing pretty quickly. Part-time nurse aide, bonus parent, mailman, messenger...if it needs to be done, chances are Jasmine has probably done it.

Funny enough, tucked inside all that controlled chaos is something she actually finds peaceful: bookkeeping.

Jasmine knows money, and there is something satisfying about sitting down, getting everything organized, and making the numbers fall exactly where they're supposed to.

But the people are what make Daspit home.

She loves seeing her students, building relationships, and finding little ways to make the people around her smile. She also appreciates how well Daspit's smaller staff works together, especially when everyone comes together for events like their annual Christmas and Holiday Program. With students, staff, and families all in one place, it has become one of her favorite school traditions.

Jasmine also credits former school secretary Ms. Debbie Romero with helping her become the secretary she is today. Ms. Debbie trained her for the role, passing along the knowledge that only someone who has actually sat behind that desk can really understand.

Her advice for students follows the same kind of attitude Jasmine carries through a busy front office:

Stay positive and don't give up.

And when she finally gets a quiet moment away from the paperwork, phones, students, families, messages, mail, and occasional nursing duties, Jasmine is a serious reader who loves getting into a good book.

But there is one more thing Jasmine probably didn't realize when she sat down for this interview:

She is the reason the Secretary Spotlight Series exists.

After visiting Daspit many times and watching Jasmine somehow take care of everyone and everything around her, an idea started to form. If this much happens behind one secretary's desk, imagine the stories happening behind those desks across IPSD.

Our school secretaries answer the phones, calm the tears, find the missing paperwork, help the worried parent, solve the unexpected problem, keep track of a thousand little details, and somehow still know which child needs an extra smile that morning.

Their work deserves to be seen.

So, Jasmine, this series started with you—and now we're making our way across Iberia Parish to introduce our community to the exceptional people doing this work every day.

At Daspit, they have a phrase that brings everyone back to the same goal:

“We strive to be Bayou Strong every day.”

Watching Jasmine handle everything coming her way without missing a beat, we'd say she's doing her part. 💙💚

💙💚 Secretary Spotlight: Kesia Tauriac | Belle Place Middle School

There is something incredibly calming about sitting down with Kesia Tauriac.

She has a knowing smile, an easy laugh, and the kind of warm presence that makes you feel like everything is probably going to be okay. Spend a little time with her at Belle Place Middle School and it becomes pretty clear why she's currently their Employee of the Month.

For the past 10 years, Kesia has enjoyed being right in the middle of things—meeting parents, talking with families, and taking care of students.

Some of her favorite moments actually happen first thing in the morning.

A late check-in can sometimes come with a worried parent who needs just a little reassurance before leaving their child for the day. Kesia recognizes those moments. She understands what that parent is feeling, and she loves being able to provide a little peace with a simple message:

Your baby is going to be fine. We've got them.

That understanding comes from a very personal place for Kesia. When students or families are struggling, she can often relate because she's been through struggles of her own.

“I want someone to care for my child the way I care for everyone else's.”

Of course, caring for everyone also means wearing approximately 437 different hats.

When asked what people might not realize about being a school secretary, Kesia laughed at just how much pressure rests on their shoulders and how many different jobs they're doing at the exact same time.

She even has superpowers.

According to Kesia, her pointer finger has the ability to open doors—a power granted by being responsible for the security lock system and deciding who is allowed into the building.

And yes, her own jokes absolutely crack her up.

But when the laughter settled and she thought about her years at Belle Place Middle, she couldn't choose just one favorite memory. There have simply been too many.

Through all of them, her coworkers have remained constant. Even on the rough days, they don't always need words. Sometimes it's eye contact across the room, a grin, or a little head nod.

They understand.

They have each other's backs.

Kesia has two pieces of advice she hopes students remember:

First, be a child. Enjoy being young.

There will be plenty of time for everything that comes later.

Second, respect yourself and respect others. Good things will come your way.

And when asked what makes Belle Place Middle special, her answer couldn't have summed up that sense of family any better:

“It's not just one of us—it's all of us.”

Every school day is another opportunity for students to learn something new, connect with their teachers and friends, and take another step toward their goals.

We know life happens. Kids get sick, appointments come up, and some absences simply can't be avoided. Attendance Awareness Month isn't about perfection—it’s about remembering that every day a student can be at school is a day that matters.

Showing up consistently helps students stay connected to what they're learning and keeps them from having to play catch-up after returning.

So this September, we're encouraging our IPSD families to make attendance a priority whenever possible.

💙💚 Secretary Spotlight: Kristi Mistretta of Belle Place Elementary

There may be no better way to explain what Kristi Mistretta does than to simply sit in her office for a few minutes and watch.

During her Secretary Spotlight interview, Kristi was answering questions while simultaneously juggling what seemed like at least ten other things. People came in. People went out. Questions were asked. Problems needed solving.

She never missed a beat.

After 13 years with IPSD, Kristi knows the ins and outs of her school because, at some point, just about everything comes across her desk. She is security, tech support, occasional mechanic, bookkeeper, scheduler, sometimes nurse, disciplinarian, janitor, filer, and—perhaps most importantly—unofficial therapist to students, parents, AND staff.

As Kristi puts it, “As it comes, I do it.”

And the day doesn't necessarily end when the final bell rings. Kristi also serves as Student Care Director, which means you can find her at school in the mornings and some evenings, too.

Still, with everything she handles, her favorite part of the job is simple: the kids and the relationships she builds with them. Each relationship is different, and she loves getting to know who they are, their histories, and their stories.

Kristi also credits Principal Angela Louviere as an important part of her own story. The two made the move from Dodson together, and Kristi says Ms. Louviere has taught her a great deal over the years. They know how to work together, understand one another, and make a pretty great team.

That same connection carries throughout the staff. During the interview, several staff members passed through the office—and more than a few made sure to stop and express just how much they love and appreciate Kristi.

Of course, this crew knows how to have fun, too. There are dress-up days, pep rallies, and plenty of opportunities to make memories. One particularly memorable “Under the Sea” dress-up day happened to fall on the same day as a district walkthrough. Talk about timing!

Outside of school, Kristi is an avid thrifter who loves old things and the stories that come with them.

Her advice to students is fitting for someone who can somehow keep ten plates spinning and still enjoy the day:

“Work hard and have fun. Make the best of it.”

And when asked what makes her school special, Kristi didn't point to a program or a building. She pointed to her people.

“We all get each other. We all click.”

After spending a little time in her office, it isn't difficult to see that special bond in action. 💙💚

💙💚 Secretary Spotlight: April Landry | IPSB Education Center

After 29 years with IPSD, April Landry is the new girl.

Well...sort of.

For 28 years, April knew IPSD from inside the classroom as a teacher. This year, she traded that classroom for a new role at the Educational Center as secretary to Brett Ferguson, Director of Federally Funded Programs.

And after nearly three decades in education, she is discovering there is still plenty left to learn.

April now gets to interact with teachers and help principals from an entirely different perspective. She works alongside supervisors, gets a behind-the-scenes look at another side of education, and—perhaps most special of all—gets to experience this new chapter while her own daughter begins her career as a teacher.

There have also been a few adjustments.

For example, after 28 years of knowing that ringing classroom phones could usually wait, April is still getting used to the fact that answering the phone is now actually part of her job.

And no, being a secretary isn't just filling out timesheets.

April spends a surprising amount of time researching and looking for ways to make processes easier for the people around her. Even though her role has changed, that teacher instinct to find a solution and help someone else succeed clearly hasn't gone anywhere.

She hasn't completely left students behind, either. When students come to the Educational Center for testing, April gets those one-on-one interactions she spent so many years enjoying and another opportunity to help families.

Looking back over her career, April can point to educators who helped shape her long before she became one herself. Her high school Home Economics teacher, Ms. Broussard, her high school English teacher, Bertha Meyers, and fellow educator Linda Freeman are just a few of the many people whose influence stayed with her.

Now, 29 years later, April has some advice of her own:

Your attitude is what determines your year. Do your best, and don't let others lead you down the wrong path.

She's also starting to prepare for another chapter somewhere on the horizon: retirement. April has been collecting hobbies for the occasion, including making sourdough bread, gardening, crafting, hunting, and fishing. At this rate, retirement may be busier than work.

But after putting nearly her entire career into Iberia Parish, April's answer to what makes IPSD special carries a little more weight:

“My district is special because it is my home. I put my entire career here, and that's what many of us do. It's home.”

Twenty-nine years. Two very different roles. One district.

And she's still learning something new. 💙💚

Happy Labor Day, IPSD!

Today we celebrate the people whose hard work keeps our communities moving, growing, and thriving—including the many different careers our students may one day choose for themselves.

All Iberia Parish School District schools and offices are closed today, Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day.

Enjoy the extra day to rest, spend time with family, and recharge. We’ll see everyone back tomorrow! 💙💚
