Save the Data: Sourcing, Securing, & Recovering Disappearing Information
The Southeastern Michigan League of Libraries, SEMLOL, is seeking presentations and speakers for the Spring membership meeting on the library’s part in ensuring continued access to information and data. Digital (and also print) information has certain vulnerabilities and we as library professionals have a duty to ensure that our users are able to access authoritative and reliable information to meet their needs. We will focus this meeting on ways of fulfilling that charge. The Spring 2025 SEMLOL meeting will take place Tuesday, April 8, 2025 from 2-4 p.m. on Zoom.
In this session, we would like to share and explore ways that each of us are able, within our own practice, to provide continuing access to information that may disappear from websites of organizations we have come to rely on. We are looking for presenters who can share website archiving practices or alternative sources of quality information we can turn to when our previously trusted sources have continuity issues, disappear behind paywalls, or are removed from public access altogether.
This could be an entry point for talks on: community outreach, stakeholder education, Open Education Resources, collection development (print v. digital), technological solutions, and copyright issues, among others.
We are looking for presentations of anywhere from 10-30 minutes. We would love to hear people talk about what they are doing, what they are planning to do, what others can do to help, and leave with ideas for action items. Live or pre-recorded content is acceptable, however we would like someone who knows the presentation to attend the meeting for Q&A.
Proposal Submission Deadline is end of day March 6th, 2025.
Submit a proposal by sending the title, name of speaker(s), and an abstract of no more than 250 words using this Google Form by end of day on March 6th, 2025. Accepted proposals will be notified shortly after.
We think this meeting will also be of interest to our colleagues in public libraries, special libraries, GLAM institutions, other fields of education, and LIS students. As always, they are encouraged to submit proposals and attend this meeting as well.
We look forward to your submissions!
