Our hearts are heavy tonight as we mourn the loss of Retired Firefighter, Scott Schmitt. Scott was a dedicated firefighter for our department for 25 years. His passion for the fire service was inspiring, and he will be remembered as a leader and role model to us all.

Scott has made a lasting impact on all of our lives here at the NHFD, as well as surrounding departments. We will continue to carry his legacy, and make sure that he is never forgotten.

Rest easy Scott, we got it from here.

Scott Schmitt, 61, of St. Anna died surrounded by family after a short battle with cancer on Monday, May 11, 2026. Scott was born February 28, 1965, the son of Randy and Hope Mascotti Schmitt of New Holstein. He was a graduate of New Holstein High School, with the class

๐Ÿ”ด This April 26th - May 3rd, join the New Holstein Fire Department and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, and "Light the Night" by lighting your house or business in the color of red to remember our brothers and sisters in the fire service who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

"The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation launched Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters in 2017 to commemorate the Foundationโ€™s 25th anniversary. Held annually during the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, this tribute has grown to include fire departments, families, and communities across the country lighting their homes and buildings in red to honor fallen firefighters.

We invite you to join us by lighting your home, fire department, or community building in red during Memorial Weekend as a symbol of support and remembrance."

๐ŸŒช Did you know that April 13-17 is Severe Weather Awareness Week? Mother Nature sure didn't forget!

Please take the opportunity to make sure you are prepared for a tornado or any severe weather event, using the guidelines from Wisconsin Emergency Management:

-Create an emergency plan and practice it.
-Know where designated shelters are located at home, work, and school. Be ready to go there when a tornado warning is issued.
-Have multiple ways to receive alerts about approaching severe weather. Outdoor warning sirens, NOAA Weather Radios, local media, and mobile devices are all important tools. Donโ€™t rely on any single source for important life-saving information.
-If you have a mobile device, make sure it is enabled to receive Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). On many devices, that option is available in the settings menu. Find out more about WEA at https://readywisconsin.wi.gov/be-informed/be-alert/.
-Stay weather aware by checking the daily forecast for your area.
-Create an emergency kit for your home. Find tips for making a kit at https://readywisconsin.wi.gov.

๐ŸŒจ Now that the snow has stopped, it is a great time to check your vents and exhaust pipes on the outside of your house! Snow blocking furnace and dryer vents can lead to carbon monoxide buildup on the inside of your home, which could cause life threatening medical emergencies, and in some cases, death.

It is also a great time to test or install a CO alarm in your house to detect CO in case of a leak!
