🍂🐴 Silver Saddles is back—and we couldn’t be happier!

Monday morning, we welcomed our friends from Stoneridge Gracious Retirement Living of Cary back to the farm for a fall morning full of horses, laughter, connection, and a few bittersweet moments.

We laughed with long-time friends who have been joining us for years, and we were grateful to meet new friends, too. We missed some of the horses who have retired, but everyone was quick to find a new favorite to connect with.

This wonderful group asked thoughtful questions, got right to work grooming, and discovered just how powerful a calm, gentle touch can be. A couple of our horses were so relaxed they looked ready for a little nap!

Then it was time for a horse parade! 🎉 We cheered our equine friends on before wrapping up the morning with some well-deserved treats for the horses.

And making a special appearance was Truffles, our mini! She’s beginning to get more comfortable around groups of people, and she quickly became a favorite. We have a feeling we’ll be seeing plenty more of Truffles this fall!

Thank you, Stoneridge, for spending your morning with us. We’re so glad Silver Saddles is back—and we can’t wait to welcome more friends to the farm this fall!

🐴 MONDAY MOTIVATION: WE NEED HORSE PEOPLE! 🐴

Horse & Buddy is looking for experienced horse people to join our Horse Leader Team—and we need your help spreading the word!

Take a look at these smiles in the photo. ❤️ The appreciation between a participant and their volunteer says so much about what happens here. The smiles, accomplishments, connections, and progress our participants experience are a joy to witness—and our Horse Leaders are a vital part of making those moments possible.

Most of our lessons depend on a volunteer leader to partner with the participant and their horse. Without our leaders, many of these experiences simply couldn't happen.

We are especially looking for retirees with horse experience who have weekday availability and high school/college students with horse experience who can volunteer afternoons or Saturdays.

🐎 Could you be a Horse Leader?

We recommend two years of significant horse experience and an understanding of horse behavior. Leaders should be comfortable with:

• Bringing horses in from the pasture
• Leading in the arena and on trails
• Grooming and tacking/untacking independently
• Recognizing stress or discomfort
• Confidently handling horses of all sizes
• Responding calmly to spooks, pulling, slow walking, and unexpected situations

If you have the horse experience, we can help you learn the rest!

🎉VOLUNTEER RAFFLE WINNER! 🎉

We’re celebrating our amazing volunteers today—and especially Sarah G., our August Volunteer Raffle winner! 🥳

Every time a volunteer comes to the barn and gives their time, they place a raffle ticket in our volunteer raffle basket. Then, once a month, one lucky volunteer gets a little extra thank-you from Horse & Buddy!

This month, Dan and Dillon took a pause from their lesson to draw the winning ticket and congratulate Sarah.

But BE SURE TO WATCH AND LISTEN ALL THE WAY TO THE END because Dan has a very important announcement.

Apparently, Dan is quite the entrepreneur and took the limelight to plus his shredding service! 📄✂️ If you have documents that need shredding, simply put them in Dan’s shredding box in the barn office, and he’ll be happy to take care of them!

We love our volunteers. We love our horses. And apparently, we have a budding business owner in the barn!

Congratulations, Sarah—and thank you to every volunteer who makes Horse & Buddy possible!

Horse & Buddy horses: “It’s September! Time to grow a winter coat!”
Us: “Um… have you checked the temperature lately?!”

A BIG thank you to Wendy for coming back to Horse & Buddy this week to help keep some of our fuzziest friends comfortable! After giving several of our horses a full-body clip in the early spring, Wendy returned to give Cooper, Lilly, and Finn fresh trace clips. ✂️🐴

But why are they getting fuzzy when it’s STILL so hot outside?! Believe it or not, it’s not the temperature telling them winter is coming—it’s the amount of daylight! As the days get shorter and it gets dark earlier, horses’ bodies start receiving the signal to grow their winter coats.

Apparently, Cooper, Lilly, and Finn did not get the memo that it’s still 90 degrees outside. 😂

We are so thankful to Wendy for sharing her time and expertise to help our horses stay comfortable as the seasons change. Thank you, Wendy!

Happy Labor Day from Horse & Buddy!

Around here, “work” can look a lot of different ways.

It can be a horse patiently standing for a grooming session.
A volunteer showing up ready to lend a hand.
An instructor finding a new way to help a rider succeed.
An Equine Specialist creating space for connection.
A participant trying something new—or simply enjoying time with a horse.

There’s a lot of work that happens behind every one of those moments, but we’re reminded every day that the opportunity for connection is worth the effort.

This Labor Day, we’re celebrating the people and horses who help create those opportunities—and all the possibilities that come from them.

Here’s to the work that makes connection possible!

IT’S INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CHARITY!

Today is a day to celebrate the power of giving—and at Horse & Buddy, we know that charity comes in many forms.

You can give money. 💵
Your financial support helps provide hay, feed, farrier care, veterinary care, program supplies, and so much more for the horses and people who make our programs possible.

You can give tack and supplies. 🐴
That saddle gathering dust in your tack room? Those grooming supplies you no longer need? Your gently used horse equipment could have a second life helping our herd and our programs.

And you can give your time. ❤️
Become a volunteer! From helping with lessons and programs to grooming, horse care, barn chores, and special events, our volunteers are an essential part of the Horse & Buddy community.

Give money. Give tack. Give time. Give possibilities.

However you choose to give, YOU can make a difference at Horse & Buddy.

On International Day of Charity, we're asking:

What can YOU give?

🐴 Thankful Thursday: Celebrating Tucker!🐴

Today, we’re feeling especially thankful for Tucker as we announce his well-deserved retirement from Horse & Buddy!

For almost 3 years, Tucker has been making connections and leaving his hoofprint on the Horse & Buddy community. He partnered with countless participants through therapeutic riding lessons, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, Equine Assisted Learning, and Silver Saddles group visits. He was always ready to be part of the experience—and he was especially good at making people smile along the way!

Tucker even experienced fame when he was featured in a Nike shoe release ad! 👟

And then there were Tucker's special talents. 😂 He was determined to be the first one into the barn for meals, so no one ever had to wonder who was watching the clock at feeding time. And if you ever wondered why we kept so much shampoo on hand… Tucker was always happy to demonstrate! Rolling in the mud was one of his favorite hobbies.

Tucker was also a superstar in our Equine Assisted Learning sessions. He was wonderful at demonstrating horse body language and markings—and he didn't mind at all when participants painted parts of a horse right onto him! One of our favorite activities was wetting down his legs to reveal the surprise underneath: Tucker may look white, but he's actually gray—and yes, those are real white socks!

Most of all, we are thankful for all the connections Tucker helped create. From the arena to the therapy space, from EAL activities to visits with our Silver Saddles participants, Tucker has been part of so many meaningful moments.

Thank you, Tucker, for almost three years of hard work, muddy rolls, shampoo-worthy adventures, painted body parts, and—most importantly—connections.

We hope retirement brings you plenty of good meals, soft places to roll, and absolutely no shortage of mud. You’ve earned it.

Happy Retirement, Tucker!

What happens when some of the Horse & Buddy staff and volunteers head downtown to Cary for a night at the movies? A whole lot of fun… and a familiar face on the big screen!

This weekend some gathered to see the amazing film Horsegirls — and you might recognize someone special in this photo… Matthew Schwab! ⭐️

Matthew is a local celebrity, Down syndrome advocate, and international speaker who was part of the Horse & Buddy community for many years. It was so much fun to see a familiar Horse & Buddy face featured in this wonderful film! We are so proud of Matthew and all that he continues to accomplish.

It was a great evening in Cary filled with friendship, laughter, and a little movie magic! 🎥🐎

Not pictured: the Moms — both Janet’s AND Laura’s!

If you haven't seen Horsegirls, we highly recommend it! Check your streaming services — Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Disney+.

Have you seen it yet? Let us know what you thought! 👇

🍎FRIYAY at Horse & Buddy! 🍎

When a thunderstorm rolls in, the rain starts pouring, and the plans for the day suddenly need to change… you PIVOT! 🌧️

We are so lucky to have such creative, resourceful, and flexible equine specialists and instructors who can turn an unexpected rainy day into an opportunity for learning, connection, and FUN!

Yesterday’s EAL session was a perfect example. With the weather putting a pause on some of the original plans, our participants turned their attention to an important question:

Which apple does your horse like best? 🍎🤔

Participants worked with our horses to taste-test different varieties and discover their preferences. And as it turns out, our horses have opinions!

But this simple activity had a bigger lesson behind it. Just like horses have different preferences, people do too. We may like different foods, have different interests, learn in different ways, or see things differently—and that’s okay! Learning to notice, understand, and accept those differences is an important part of building relationships and connecting with others.

And the official barn consensus?

🍎 Cosmic Crisp appears to be the favorite! 🍎

Who knew our horses were such apple connoisseurs? 😂

A big FRIYAY shoutout to our amazing ES’ and instructors for always finding a way to turn “Well, that wasn’t the plan…” into “Look what we can do instead!”

That creativity and flexibility is pretty special.
