With the weather finally (finally!) cooperating, we'll be starting our Spring clean-up and planting activities shortly. We need volunteers to help and would welcome anyone interested in putting a little love into the park. We will post an upcoming schedule shortly. In the meantime, check out our activities from last year, courtesy of our URI intern Adam Hagen:

Once you've shovelled out, do yourself a favor and take a walk in the park. You'll have some pretty deep drifts, but it's truly a winter wonderland. Thank you to Sam Sigg for the pictures!

As Ferris Bueller once wisely said, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." The park is a live and well and thriving this winter.

Sometimes it takes a lot of work to make small changes, but over time they make a huge difference. This summer, aided by our fabulous URI Intern , URI's Chris Ozyck, and his team from Common Ground School, we have been clawing back the border area in the Southwest corner of the park from an entrenched army of ivy, mugwart, greenbriar, multiflora rose, and other invasives. As you can see from the before & after picture, we're starting to make some headway in beautifying this corner of our world.

It's full on summer and that means Spotted Lanternfly! They primarily feed on another invasive species prevalent in the park, Tree of Heaven. The Friend of Fort Wooster team got suitably creeped out by the thousands of "visitors". Remember, these are incredibly destructive pests so feel free to step any you see. We are working it parks to reduce the number of invasive Trees of Heaven within Fort Wooster Park to allow for more native trees to flourish.

Shout out to volunteer (and designated Ranger Rick) Sam Sigg and his High School crew for their tireless work in the park. The work Sam and his team is 100% manual (no chainsaws allowed by Friends volunteers). So if you want to get rid of an old telephone pole or tree trunk, you do it the old fashioned way!

How to begin to suppress the nightmare that is the invasive Japanese Knotweed from taking over your trails? Cardboard. Lots and lots of cardboard, followed by hundreds of yards of woodchips.

Spring has sprung with carpets of this blue beauty all throughout the lower park fields. If you notice all the work that's going on in the park along the Townsend Avenue side, please consider joining us as we continuing our de-vining efforts.
