Yale University Library - Microform Reading Room The reading room contains one of the largest collections of its kind, and is an especially rich source of newspapers and other primary source material.

All microforms are cataloged and searchable in Orbis. With 700,000 rolls of microfilm and 8 million sheets of microfiche, the Microform Reading Room at Sterling Memorial Library holds the second largest repository of microform in the nation. Equipped with the latest scanners and digital equipment, the facility is an invaluable part of the Yale University Library system. A dedicated team of 42 Yale

Halloween originated as a Celtic festival called Samhain when the line between dead and living was blurred, so the dead could return for the night. The holiday was turned into a more Christian holiday when, in the 8th Century, November 1st was declared All Saints' Day (or All Hallows' Day), so the night before was All Hallows' Eve and eventually Halloween. These images are all from the New York Times over the years and show the various aspects of Halloween in the United States.

Not everyone likes Valentine's Day, but nobody can deny its popularity. It is the holiday with the second highest greeting card sales only behind Christmas.
The history of Valentine's Day is not entirely clear, but it is apparently based on one of the Catholic saints by the name Valentine. The most popular theory is that St. Valentine lived in Rome in the 3rd century AD at a time when marriage was outlawed because the emperor thought single men made better soldiers. It is said that St. Valentine performed secret marriages for young lovers, but was eventually caught and jailed. While there, he supposedly healed his jailor's daughter's sight and became close with her. He reportedly wrote her a note before his ex*****on signed "Your Valentine." And so the phrase was born...
