The first English translation of Norway's 1274 Law of the Land was published yesterday, just 750 years after King Magnus the Lawmender promulgated the Old Norse original.

The first English translation of Magnus the Lawmender’s law code, this book allows students and scholars to interpret, compare and add their perspectives to this crucial source to European legal history. The Laws of the Land are one of the very few law books issued in the Middle Ages which regulat...

We are near the end of an eventful year. People long in their hearts for peace and safety, comfort and the company of family and friends. Above all perhaps they long for a world where justice will prevail over injustice and violence. Canon law has a tradition of attention to equity and benign behavior as its core values to realize this vision. Hopefully you can celebrate Christmas in a way that makes you and the people you meet happy!

Sometimes it seems time goes much faster than expected! The academic year 2023-2024 has already started, and we would feel sorry not to wish good luck to both staff and students anywhere who venture into the subject of medieval canon law. Hopefully it will be an occasion to discover new perspectives on medieval history, church history and medieval law. Some of you will work on editions, studying manuscripts or archival records, others on papers and monographs, others will try to connect medieval canon law with digital humanities. Whatever choices you make we do hope you will be enriched by dealing with medieval canon law!

The academic year 2022-2023 has nearly reached its end. Hopefully both teachers and students can look back at a fruitful year of scholarly development. We wish you and those closest to you a good holiday time! For those who prepare new curricula, travel to libraries and archives for research, and those thinking about a good theme for further research we wish you lots of inspiration, creativity and tenacity in pursuing your goals. Finis coronat opus!
