The New Haven Humane Commission envisions and supports The Six Freedoms, as amended by Maddie’s Fund, for all companion animals at our shelter and within the city limits:

1. Freedom from hunger or thirst by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor

2. Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area

3

. Freedom from pain, injury, or disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment

4. Freedom to express normal behavior by providing sufficient space, proper facilities, and company of the animal’s own kind

5. Freedom from fear and distress by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering

6. Freedom to Live by finding adoptive homes for all healthy and treatable shelter dogs and cats

The Humane Commission meets at 6:00 PM on the third Monday of each month except on Monday holidays. The meetings are held at the shelter, Police Substation 10, 332 Whalley Avenue and are open to the public. Kroogman New Haven Animal Shelter. Your financial support is critical to saving lives and creating happy healthy pet families in New Haven. Due to limited city funding, our future is dependent on the generosity of animal lovers through grants and bequests and fees for services. Every little bit counts! Your support enables us to continue to be a community resource committed to improving the quality of life of our animals by maintaining and enhancing our facility, equipment and programs. Together, we can build a safe community where all companion animals are cared for without the threat of being homeless or unwanted. Tax ID No. available on request. Louder for those in the back. DON'T LEAVE YOUR PETS IN THE CAR.
If you see a dog in a vehicle, call 911. State laws vary on window breaking, etc. And while we're 100% sure its' worth helping the dog, you may want to know the laws in your state.
**On a side note, people with certain illnesses, circulation problems, etc. who don't feel heat - be aware of the signs of heat distress in your pets. You may feel cool, but your pet won't.

It’s summer. It’s hot. Leave them at home and in air conditioning, or at least a cool room with access to water. Despite what you may think - your dog (or even cat) does not have to go out with you in the heat.
